Notebook: Game 23 vs. Wareham

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers play host to the Wareham Gatemen tonight at 7 p.m. at Veterans Field in the last of a three game home stand. Chatham (10-12) is coming off of a 7-1 loss to Cotuit while the Gatemen (12-9-1) fell to Hyannis 6-4 on Tuesday.

The two teams have met twice already this season, with the road team winning each time. Chatham won the first matchup on June 20, 7-1, while Wareham evened the series with a 1-0 win eight days later.

The Anglers currently sit in fourth place in the East Division, one game in front of the last place Brewster Whitecaps. Wareham has been rolling recently, winning seven of its last nine games to take control of the top spot in the West Division.

Hot Hitters

DJ Artis has reached base in his last six games, dating back to June 28 against Wareham. In that stretch, Artis has recorded five hits while walking once and being hit by a pitch.

The Liberty outfielder currently leads the team in walks with 11 and is currently batting .217 Artis went 1-for-5 yesterday, singling in the seventh inning and laying down a sacrifice bunt in the third.

Jordan Romero has hit .300 in his first four games for the Anglers, driving in a run and scoring another in ten at-bats.

Leading the charge in Wareham’s recent surge is Joey Bart, a catcher-first baseman from Georgia Tech. In his past four games, Bart has hit .455, racking up five of his eight total hits.

Throwing Heat

Nick Meservey (1-0), who did not factor in to the decision in his last outing a week ago, takes the ball for the Anglers tonight. The Seattle University left-hander has yet to allow a run in three outings this summer. In his longest appearance this summer, Meservey pitched three and two-thirds innings of shutout, two-hit baseball against Wareham. He earned the win in Chatham’s 7-1 victory over the Gatemen.

Pitching coach Rob Bono said that Meservey and Bryant hurler James Karinchak will be paired together this season. In Wareham on June 20, Karincak started before being lifted in favor of Meservey while the roles were reversed on June 29 against Cotuit.

The Gatemen send Jake Walters (1-1) to the mound in search of the sophomore’s first victory since his first outing on June 12. This season Walters has crafted a 4.10 ERA, striking out six batters in 15 and a third innings.

On the Horizon

Chatham travels to Fenway Park tomorrow for an off-day practice before heading to Brewster on Friday for a 5 p.m. date with the Whitecaps.
