Hyannis, Mass. — The Hyannis Harbor Hawks (6-9) exploded for four runs in the fifth inning en route to a 9-2 victory over the Chatham Anglers (8-7) at McKeon Park on Sunday night. After Kale Breaux pitched three scoreless innings to start off the game, Lincoln Henzman (0-1) allowed five runs in an inning and two-thirds, taking the loss.

“Every few games we come out very flat, and never really get energized,” said manager John Schiffner. “They’ve got to bring the A game every day [for] nine innings, and tonight, like several of the other games we’ve had, they just did not do that.”

Hyannis batters made contact the entire night, striking out for the first time in the fourth inning. Off of Breaux, the Harbor Hawks scorched multiple pitches that Chatham outfielders had to catch back at the warning track.

The turning point came in the fifth inning when the Harbor Hawks touched Henzman for four runs on three hits. In that frame, Dylan Busby powered a home run far over the wall in left field to put the game out of reach. 

Carl Stajduhar also homered off of Henzman, slugging a round tripper to deep center to break a scoreless tie in the fourth.

While Parker Rigler allowed one hit in his inning and two-thirds of work, the rest of the Anglers bullpen faltered, conceding all nine runs on the night.

In his Angler debut, Caleb Gilbert of Louisiana State University allowed two runs in just two-thirds of an inning – though only one was scored an earned run.

Austin Magestro did not fair much better, giving up two runs in the eighth.

“We were flat to begin with, but so were [the Harbor Hawks],” said Schiffner. “And then they got a few runs and once they got the five we just shut down. 

Chatham’s offense managed just six hits in the affair while striking out nine times. The bats came to life slightly towards the end of the game as the Anglers scored twice in the eighth and threatened with the bases loaded in the ninth, but failed to plate a run. Ten runners were left on base for Chatham, eight of which came in the last three innings.

Chase Pinder reached base in his last three at-bats, salvaging a game at the plate where he started off 0-for-2. The Clemson Tiger scored the Anglers’ first run after doubling in the eighth and then singled to load the bases with two outs in the ninth. 

Chatham will have Monday off before returning to Veterans Field, looking to get back on track against the Wareham Gatemen. First pitch is at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and can be seen and heard live on the Cape Cod Baseball Network.
