Stevens Shines in Debut as Anglers Beat Bourne

Chatham, Mass. — Moises Ceja took the mound in the eighth inning of last night’s game versus the Bourne Braves with the bases loaded and two outs. After Bourne had cut Chatham’s lead to one a few batters earlier, the UCLA lefty was called in to stem the rally. With his fifth pitch, Ceja dropped a two-strike breaking ball just out of reach of Bourne’s Evan Mendoza, who chased it to end the threat.

Jacob Stevens (1-0) shined in his debut, going five scoreless innings as the Anglers got back in the win column with a 3-1 victory over Bourne on Friday night.

After allowing a pair of leadoff singles to open the game, the Boston College right-hander settled down, conceding only one other hit in the contest. Stevens struck out two batters on the evening.

Chatham jumped out to an early lead thanks to a pair of Boston College Eagles. After Jake Palomaki walked to start the bottom of the first, the infielder quickly moved to second on a single by Chase Pinder. One batter later, with Donovan Casey at the plate, Palomaki would come around to score after his college teammate ripped an RBI single into the outfield off of Bourne’s AJ Moore (0-2).

The Anglers would score a second time in the inning when a throwing error by shortstop Jeremy Eierman allowed Pinder to trot home.

Chatham’s bullpen once again held strong on Friday as three Anglers’ relievers combined for six strikeouts, allowing five hits. Both Ceja and Isaac Mattson threw multiple innings in relief, conceding just one hit apiece.

Bourne came within one in the eighth inning as Connor Wong’s single drove in Brennan Breaux to make the score 2-1, before Ceja came in and slammed the door. The save was Ceja’s second on the season as the junior struck out three of the five batters he faced.

Ceja’s teammate at UCLA, Sean Bouchard, reached base three times for the Anglers in the affair and scored an insurance run for Chatham in the bottom half of the eighth.

The Anglers are back in action on Saturday night at 7 p.m. against the Brewster Whitecaps at Veterans Field. Make sure to catch the Anglers Extra Pregame show at 6:40 on the Cape Cod Baseball Network.
