Notebook: Game 12 @ Harwich

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers look to win their third straight game tonight as they take on the Harwich Mariners at Whitehouse Field. The Mariners sit atop the West Divison at 9-2 while the Anglers (6-5) are three games back and look to gain some ground on their divisional opponent.

At the Plate: John Aiello reached base four times in five plate appearances yesterday after walking, being hit by a pitch twice, and singling in the ninth.

In eight games for Chatham, the Wake Forest product has six hits and three walks, while also driving in two runs on the season.

D.J. Artis had two hits in yesterday’s game, scoring a crucial insurance run in the eighth off of a 2-run single by Donovan Casey. Also walking twice, the Liberty freshman pushed his team lead in free bases to 10.

In his first start since Opening Day, Joe Freiday went 1-for-3 with a long home run to right field.

Harwich sports a potent lineup that has turned in 51 runs this summer. Leading the way for the Mariners has been Virginia’s Ernie Clement. The infielder has been hitting .381 this summer, with 15 singles and eight runs scored.

With the Cavaliers this season, Clement split time batting leadoff and second for a UVA team that was coming off of a National Championship in Clement’s freshman season. The Rochester, New York native hit .351 for Virginia and led the team in runs and hits.

On the Mound: Chatham sends Tom Cosgrove (1-0) to the bump after the Manhattan southpaw earned his first win over Yarmouth-Dennis on June 14. In that outing, Cosgrove went 5 and a third innings, striking out four and conceding three runs. Cosgrove crafted a 5.06 ERA in his lone start of the year.

For the Mariners, St. John’s pitcher Ryan McAuliffe (1-0) will toe the rubber, looking to bring his team to double-digit wins on the season. A Massachusetts native, McAuliffe made his first start for Harwich after allowing just one run over six innings in the Mariners’ 6-2 win over Orleans on June 14. The right-hander struck out five in the outing.

McAuliffe, who started the most games for the Red Storm this season, posted a 4.32 ERA at St. John’s, going 5-2 with 44 strikeouts this past spring.

Down the Road: The Anglers will be back in Chatham tomorrow night to take on the Bourne Braves before hosting Brewster the following night. Both games get underway at 7 p.m.
