Notebook: Game 10 @ Wareham

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers will look to rebound from last night’s shutout loss to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox when they take on the Wareham Gatemen tonight at 6:30 at Spillane Field.

At the Plate: Stuart Fairchild was Chatham’s only player to record multiple hits last night, going 2-for-3 with a walk.

The outfielder from Wake Forest has appeared in six games for the Anglers, reaching base in all of them. Fairchild’s .353 batting average is third on the team while he leads Chatham in doubles with two.

The Demon Deacon has turned in good at-bats and credited his success at the plate last night to his ability to see a pitch he had been looking for all game. Fairchild drove a fastball to left-center in the first inning and then jumped on a Mitch Hart curveball in the fourth.

Another Wake Forest product leads the Wareham Gatemen’s offensive charge. Gavin Sheets, a left slugger from Lutherville, Maryland, improved his batting average to .346 after recording an RBI single in the first inning of last night’s loss to Orleans.

The first baseman has homered in one game this year and has driven in nine runs – the second highest RBI total for Wareham.

On the Mound: The Anglers will trot a new hurler to the mound tonight in Bryant right-hander James Karinchak. The sophomore stands at six feet two inches and can throw his fastball in the mid-90s.

For the Bulldogs this season Karinchak won the Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Year, going 12-2 with a 2.04 ERA in his sophomore season.

The Walden, New York native features a deadly fastball paired with an off-speed curveball that befuddles opposing hitters. Karinchak used his diverse pitching arsenal to strikeout 104 batters in just 88 and a third innings of work this season.

Last year, in 2015, Karinchak was named the 2015 Northeast Conference Rookie of the year.

Brett Conine will get a chance to record his first win of the CCBL season, as he starts for the Gatemen tonight.

In his first outing, against Orleans back on June 15th, the right-hander allowed two runs – one earned – on four hits in four innings. Corine also struck out three of the fifteen batters he faced.

As a freshman at Cal State Fullerton, Conine put together a 5.10 ERA while going 3-3 for the Titans. Conine, while primarily being used as a reliever, struck out 24 batters in his 2016 campaign.

Down the Road: The Anglers will have a day off tomorrow, their first off the season. They will continue their three game road trip on Wednesday night against the Y-D Red Sox before heading to Harwich to play the Mariners.
