Notebook: Game 8 @ Falmouth

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers make their first trip to Falmouth today to face off with the Commodores at Guv Fuller Field. Chatham stands at 3-4 after yesterday’s extra inning loss to Brewster while Falmouth dropped to 5-2 with a loss to Wareham last night.

At the Plate: Jake Palomaki reached base three times last night with two singles and a walk. The Boston College second baseman has gone 3-for-7 and has walked twice in his first two games with Chatham.

His production in Chatham follows a performance in the NCAA Super Regionals where he had two hits and scored a run against the third ranked Miami Hurricanes.

Stuart Fairchild has quietly been successful in the batters box, hitting .286 in five games played. The Demon Deacon has reached base a total of eight times, a feat accomplished by only four other Anglers this season.

Falmouth’s Kevin Merrell has been off to a hot start for the Commodores. The University of South Florida product has recorded multiple hits in all but two games this season. Last time out against the Anglers, Merrell went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.

On the Mound: Tanner Chock (0-0) heads back to the bump for Chatham tonight after getting a no decision in the Anglers’ 3-2 victory over Orleans last Sunday.

In his only start of the summer, the Presbyterian sophomore pitched five full innings of one-run baseball. The one run that Chock surrendered in the outing was unearned. The lefty also struck out four and allowed three hits to a Firebirds team that has scored the third highest amount of runs this season with 41.

Chock commands a strong fastball that he uses to get strikes early in the count and pitches to contact, trusting his defense to make plays and get outs.

Toeing the rubber for Falmouth will be Thomas Ponticelli (0-1), a right-hander out of the University of San Fransisco. His lone start of the season came in a 3-0 loss to the Harwich Mariners.

In that game, Ponticelli was touched for three unearned runs on four hits in five and two-thirds innings of work. He struck out three and was charged with the loss.

Down the Road: Chatham returns home to face the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox on Sunday night at 7 p.m. The Anglers will then trek to Wareham the following day for a 6:30 start against the Gatemen.
