Notebook: Game 7 vs. Brewster

Chatham, Mass. — After last night’s 12-4 loss to the Bourne Braves, Anglers Vice President Bob Sherman put it best when he said, “In baseball, there’s always another game tomorrow.” For Chatham (3-3), they will look to embody that statement and put yesterday’s misfortune behind them as they take on the Brewster Whitecaps tonight at 7 p.m.

At the Plate: Patrick Mathis (Texas) pushed his hitting streak to six last night, knocking in two runs on a first inning double. The Texan has hit safely in every game this season for the Anglers and currently leads Chatham in hits, with eight, and RBIs, with nine. He is also the only member of John Schiffner’s squad to have played in every game this season.

In his debut, Donovan Casey (Boston College) went 2-for-4, scoring a run and stealing a base. Appearing as the designated hitter, Casey was the only Angler to have multiple hits last night. During his time with the Eagles, the sophomore hit .273 in 36 of the BC’s games.

Last time Chatham and Brewster squared off, Maryland’s Nick Dunn exploded offensively for the Whitecaps. The second baseman scored three runs and drove in another as he went 4-for-5 in Brewster’s 14-6 win over the Anglers. Dunn currently has nine hits on the season.

On the Mound: JB Bukauskas is set to get his second start for the Anglers after dropping an opening day contest to the Falmouth Commodores, in that game Bukauskas was cruising through the first four innings, striking out seven while only allowing two hits.

The right-hander ran into trouble in the fifth, however, as the Commodores struck for four more runs off of the six-foot Tar Heel before he was lifted with an out to go in the frame. Citing a blister on his pitching hand, Bukauskas surrendered a home run to Willie Burger to start off the troublesome inning.

The hurler comes from a long line of North Carolina aces and commands a strong fastball that can touch upwards of the mid-90s. Bukauskas has proven his worth by leading the ACC with 111 strikeouts this past spring.

Opposing the Anglers’ top starter will be Brewster’s Bryan King. The southpaw from McNeese State University is familiar with the Chatham lineup, as he made his only appearance on the season in two innings of relief during Monday’s game.

In the contest, King struck out two while conceding three hits as he held the Anglers off the scoreboard in the fifth and sixth innings.

King went 6-4 with a 3.69 ERA as a freshman this season at McNeese.

Down the Road: The Anglers will head to Falmouth tomorrow for a 6 p.m. game against the Commodores, but will return to Veterans Field on Sunday to face off with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. on Sunday night.
