Chatham, Mass. — After a 14-6 loss at the hands of the Brewster Whitecaps last night, the Anglers are back in action against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. The game gets underway at 5 p.m. at YD’s Red Wilson Field.

At the Plate: Last night the Anglers suffered their worse loss on the season after allowing 10 runs in the seventh inning. However, Chatham’s offense scored six times in the contest, doubling their production from each of the first two games.

After failing to register a hit in Sunday’s win over Orleans, Gunnar Troutwine went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in Monday’s loss. The catcher from Wichita State played a role in four of Chatham’s six runs scored.   

Patrick Mathis built off of his 1-for-3 performance against the Firebirds by singling in three of his four at-bats yesterday. Both Mathis and Troutwine are hitting .385, best amongst Anglers who have played in every game.

Wake Forest’s John Aiello, who made his first start for the Anglers last night, looks to build off of yesterday’s two hit, two RBI performance against YD today.  

Matt Winaker of Stanford has been the best hitter for the Red Sox thus far, recording a .429 batting average and smashing a home run in YD’s opening day loss to Wareham. Winaker scored the only YD run last night in a 9-1 loss to the Harwich Mariners.

On the Rubber: Manhattan College product Tom Cosgrove will start for the Anglers today while Pat Vanderslice will be on the hill for Yarmouth-Dennis.

As a member of the Jaspers, Cosgrove led Manhattan with his 3.70 ERA, going 5-5 in 14 starts. Four of his five wins came in his last four games of the season.

“I throw two fastballs, a four-seam and a two seam, a changeup, curveball, and slider,” said Cosgrove. With a number of off-speed pitches in his arsenal, the left-hander is focusing on pairing them with his fastball to paint the strike zone early and often. “If I’m throwing a lot of first pitch strikes, I’ll be fine. Just pitch your game and it doesn’t matter who the other team is.”

The 6’ 2” sophomore struck out the most batters out of any member of the Manhattan pitching staff, with 80, and also threw two complete games on the year. Cosgrove also pitched at least six innings in nine of his starts this spring, a valuable asset for the Anglers as Chatham burned through four different relievers last night.  

For the Red Sox, Vanderslice will look to give YD its first win of the season. The righty went 7-3 this season for St. Joeseph’s, carving up opponents for a 3.44 ERA. His 49 strikeouts on the year rank last amongst Hawk starters.  

In his lone appearance against Kyle Adams’ Richmond Spiders, Vandersliced pitched 3 and two-thirds innings of relief, surrendering one run on six hits.

Down the Road: The Anglers will travel to Bourne twice in the next two days; both games begin at 6 p.m. at Doran Park. On Friday, Chatham returns home for a rematch with the Brewster Whitecaps.
