Whitecaps' 10 run inning overpowers Chatham 14-6

Whitecaps' 10 run inning overpowers Chatham 14-6

Brewster, Mass. — The Brewster Whitecaps capitalized on a number of Angler errors to score eleven runs in the seventh, blowing out Chatham 14-6.

After Maryland’s Nick Dunn roped a single into left to tie the game at 5, the Whitecaps loaded the bases on a Jason Foley throwing error and a hit batsman. Chris Farish, who made his first appearance on the year for the Anglers, walked a run in after failing to get Colby Maiola to swing on a full-count breaking ball.

Brewster then began to flex its offensive muscle, as seven consecutive batters reached base on four hits.

“We had the one bad inning. I told these guys ‘we played eight innings, you played seven good ones.’ said manager John Schiffner “We’ll learn from that and get better from that. People made mistakes, everybody made mistakes. We had errors, we had bad pitches, we had passed balls, we had wild pitches. It was just a bad inning. Learn from it.”

Jared Barnes and Brett Langhorne both connected on Farish pitches and deposited them past the outstretched glove of D.J Artis immediately following the go ahead run.

With the score then 8-5, consecutive wild pitches brought both runners home while Farish’s second base on balls made the score 11-5. Reed Howell came into try and end the inning after another Farish walk made the deficit seven.

Zack Gahagan’s sacrifice fly and a wild throw from the Chatham outfield made it 14-5 before the inning finally ended. Sixteen Whitecaps batted in the frame; all but Gahagan scored in the inning.

Starter Trevor Gay pitched three innings and allowed four runs on six hits, including a two-run homer to Matt Davis that started the Brewster offensive barrage. Davis squared up on a 3rd inning fastball and drove it over the left field wall to make the game 2-1.

“I thought [Gay] threw well, I thought he threw very well,” said Schiffner. “That’s the kind of performance we were hoping for from him. I think he ran out of gas a little bit. . . . I think there’s a lot to work with there.”

Four consecutive batters recorded hits following the Davis round tripper, including Dunn and Logan Warmoth. Both would come home to score on RBIs by Ryan Noda and Gahagan.

Chatham did rally in the following inning however, scoring four runs on five hits. Following a single and a walk, Gunnar Troutwine hit an RBI double that plated Kyle Adams. Cam Hanley also scored on the play following a throwing error to 3rd.

Troutwine would come home on a Hunter Lee double to left. Lee moved over to 3rd on a single by D.J. Artis and scored on John Aiello’s second single of the game.

Despite the discrepancy on the scoreboard, the Anglers had a strong offensive showing with 14 hits on the day.

Aiello, the shortstop from Wake Forest, went 2-for-5 with two RBIs in his first start for the Anglers. His Demon Deacon teammate, Stuart Fairchild, who also made his first appearance for Chatham today, as a pinch hitter, showed off his speed in the eighth. The sophomore slapped an off-speed pitch down the line in right and slid into third a few moments later after an error at second base.

The Anglers will be back in action tomorrow night at 5 p.m. against two-time defending champion Yarmouth-Dennis. Manhattan’s Tom Cosgrove will toe the rubber for Chatham while Pat Vanderslice of St. Joe’s will start for the Red Sox. Anglers Extra Pregame begins at 4:40 at YD’s  “Red” Wilson Field.
