Notebook: Game 3 vs. Orleans

Chatham, Mass. — In a rematch of the 2015 East Division Series, The Chatham Anglers (0-1) square off against the Orleans Firebirds (1-0) at Veterans Field at 7 p.m.

At the Plate: Gunnar Troutwine went three-for-five with two RBIs in Chatham’s Opening Day loss to Falmouth. Shortstop Matt Vernon was the only other Angler to have a multi-hit game as the junior from Appalachain State reached base four times on two hits and two walks.

Chatham will have a new face in their lineup tonight as John Aiello of Wake Forest makes his debut for John Schiffner’s squad. The switch-hitting shortstop averaged .226 at the plate for the Demon Deacons, driving in 20 runs. Aiello crushed six home runs for Wake Forest this season, good for fourth best on the team.

The Anglers were informed yesterday that Pittsburgh infielder Charles Leblanc has left the team. A fourth-round draft pick of the Texas Rangers, Leblanc ranked 10th in the country in batting average this spring at .405.

Riley Mahan, a shortstop out of the University of Kentucky spearheaded the Orleans offense, going 4-for-6 in the Firebirds’ 9-4 victory over Brewster on Friday.

On the Rubber: Following Saturday’s rainout against Bourne, Tanner Chock’s first start of the year was pushed back a day to tonight’s contest with Orleans. A righty from Presbyterian University, Chock went 3-4 with a 4.60 ERA in 2016. He struck out 72 – six batters shy of the team lead – and threw 16 wild pitches.

“I’m going to let him go out and control his game and throw his game and we’ll see what happens,” said pitching coach Rob Bono. “He’s got a good arm, he’s got a good fastball. So we’re going to attack that.”

In his 15 starts for the Blue Hose this season, Chock threw an average of about five and two-thirds innings per game. His longest outing of the spring came on a complete game, two-hit shutout versus Gardner-Webb.

Joe Ryan will take the ball for Orleans in the righty’s first start of the summer. As a sophomore for Cal State Northridge, Ryan appeared in 11 games, starting seven. He crafted a 3.35 ERA and went 1-2. Opposing batters hit .261 against Ryan while he struck out 36.

Against Alex LeFevre’s UConn squad, Ryan pitched five innings, conceding one run on three hits. Ryan, a six-foot-two right-hander, walked two and struck out three in the mid-March contest.

Down the Road: Chatham is back on the road tomorrow against Brewster. They’ll take on the Whitecaps at Stony Brook. First pitch is at 5 p.m. Following Monday’s game, the Anglers will head to Yarmouth-Dennis for a matchup with the two-time defending champions at 5 p.m.
