Notebook: Game 2 @ Bourne

Chatham, Mass. — The Chatham Anglers (0-1) square off against the Bourne Braves (1-0) for their first taste of interleague play at 6 p.m. at Bourne’s Doran Park.

At the Plate: The Anglers were led offensively yesterday by catcher Gunnar Troutwine. The Wichita State product went three-for-five with three singles, driving in two runs. In the two at-bats where he failed to reach base, Troutwine managed to make contact, flying out to center in the fifth and ending the game on a groundout to second.

The catcher’s 2 RBIs yesterday follow a spring in which he registered a team-high 37 RBIs for the Shockers. Troutwine’s seven home runs and 37 runs scored also led Witchita State, while his 55 hits on the year ranked second.

Shortstop Matt Vernon was the only other Angler to have a multi-hit game as the junior from Appalachain State reached base four times on two hits and two walks.

A transfer from North Carolina State, Vernon led the Mountaineers in four offensive categories, including RBIs with 42. No other member of Appalacian State plated more than 30 runs. Vernon’s .317 batting average was one of only two to break the .300 mark for the Mountaineers.

Third baseman Justin Yurchak, of Binghamton University, led the Bourne offense with two hits yesterday as the Braves bested Hyannis, 3-2.

On the Rubber: Tanner Chok, a righty from Presbyterian University, will get the start for Chatham. The 6’ 1” sophomore went 3-4 with a 4.60 ERA for the Blue Hose in 2016. He struck out 72 – six batters shy of the team lead – and threw 16 wild pitches.

“I’m going to let him go out and control his game and throw his game and we’ll see what happens,” said pitching coach Rob Bono. “He’s got a good arm, he’s got a good fastball. So we’re going to attack that.”

Starting 15 games for Presbyterian this season, Chok threw an average of about five and two-thirds innings per game. In his longest outing on the year, he threw a complete game, two-hit shutout against Gardner-Webb.

Joshua Shapiro heads to the mound for the Bourne Braves for the first time this season. As both a starter and a reliever at Marshall University, Shapiro went 4-5, crafting a 5.68 ERA. The freshman struck out 55 batters in 65 total innings of work as well as allowing a team-high 21 doubles.

Against Wake Forest – where three current Anglers play – Shapiro went five and a third, taking the loss on three runs and seven hits. The lefty walked six and struck out seven in the contest.

Down the Road: Chatham returns home to Veterans Field Sunday at 7 p.m. when they take on the Orleans Firebirds. The Anglers will then travel to Brewster on Monday for their first matchup with the Whitecaps at 5 p.m.
