Anglers in the Super Regionals

Chatham, Mass. — While 35 past and present Anglers suited up in the Regional Round of the NCAA’s Baseball Playoffs, only 22 remain as the Super Regionals begin Friday. All but one series – Texas A&M vs. TCU – will include at least one Angler as the remaining A’s are scattered across eight of sixteen teams.

Gainesville Super Regional at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium

No. 4 Florida: Mike Rivera, So. C (2016), Jeremy Vasquez, Jr. 1B (2016)

No. 16 Florida State: Andrew Karp, RS Fr. RHP (2016)

            Game 1: June 11, 6 p.m. (ESPN 2)

Notes: These in-state rivals have faced off three times this season with the Gators winning all three matchups. Except for a 3-2 nail-biter on March 29, the Gators have won in convincing fashion, besting the Seminoles 8-2 in mid-April and blanking them 6-0 a month earlier. Florida has won all three games in three different stadiums, claiming victory at home in Gainesville, away in Tallahassee, and at a neutral field in Jacksonville, Fla. Both Mike Rivera and Jeremy Vasquez are hitting .222 against Florida State this season while Rivera, who has appeared as both a catcher and a designated hitter against FSU, has two runs-batted-in. Andrew Karp has yet to make an appearance against the No. 4 Gators.

Baton Rouge Super Regional at Alex Box Stadium

No. 8 LSU: Caleb Gilbert, Fr. RHP (2016), Jordan Romero, Jr. C (2016), Jake Fraley, Jr. OF (2015, 2014)

            Game 1 vs. No. 17 Coastal Carolina: June 11, 9 p.m. (ESPN U)

Notes: Jake Fraley has been a model of consistency all season long, hitting .324 in 64 games played. Fraley has risen to the occasion in the NCAA Tournament, hitting .375 with four RBIs in 16 plate appearances. Incoming Angler Caleb Gilbert appeared in one game during the Regionals, allowing three runs over two innings in LSU’s 10-6 loss against Rice. Jordan Romero has played in half of the Tigers’ postseason games, going 1-for-4 as both a pinch-hitter and a designated hitter.

Lubbock Super Regional at Dan Law Field

No. 6 Texas Tech: Orlando Garcia, So. SS (2016), Tanner Gardner, So. OF (2016), Erikson Lanning, Fr. LHP (2016), Ty Damron, Jr. LHP (2015), Corey Raley, Sr. INF/OF (2015 temp.)

            Game 1 vs. East Carolina: June 10, 8 p.m. (ESPN U)

Notes: Senior Corey Raley has reached base nine times during the Red Raiders’ postseason while recording five RBIs. Orlando Garcia and Tanner Gardner have also contributed offensively as the two future Anglers hit .429 and .375 respectively in the Regionals. Gardner scored three times during Texas Tech’s 12-1 win over Fairfield. Freshman left-hander Erikson Lanning struck out three while allowing one hit in his two innings of relief against the Stags. Ty Damron took the loss after allowing four earned runs over two innings against Dallas Baptist.

Louisville Super Regional at Jim Patterson Stadium

No. 5 Louisville: Lincoln Henzman, So. RHP (2016), Zack Burdi, Jr. RHP (2015, 2014), Kyle Funkhouser, Sr. RHP (2013)

            Game 1 vs. UC Santa Barbara: June 11, 12 p.m. (ESPN 2)

Notes: Kyle Funkhouser added to his résumé by tossing eight strong innings in the Cardinals’ first game against Western Michigan. The 6-foot-3 right-hander improved his record to 9-3 after striking out six and surrendering one run on four hits. Junior Zack Burdi recorded his 11th save on the season with one and two-thirds innings of work in Louisville’s 3-1 victory over Wright State. The save clinched the Regional Championship for the No. 5 Cardinals as they swept their way into the Super Regionals.

Columbia Super Regional at Founder’s Park

No. 19 Oklahoma State: Garrett Williams, Jr. LHP/OF (2015, 2014)

            Game 1 vs. No. 9 South Carolina: June 11, 3 p.m. (ESPN 2)

Notes: In the Cowboys first victory over Clemson, Williams struck out two of the three batters he faced in one inning of relief. A day later, in his lone inning pitched, the southpaw surrendered a run on one hit and one hit batsman.

Starkville Super Regional at Polk-DeMent Stadium

No. 3 Mississippi State: Kale Breaux, Fr. LHP (2016)

            Game 1 vs. Arizona: June 10, 6:00 p.m. (ESPN 2)

Notes: Breaux has yet to appear in a postseason game, as No. 3 Mississippi State swept the Starkville Regional as the region’s top seed. During the regular season, the freshman struck out 19 over 16 and two-thirds innings while recording a 5.40 ERA. He has appeared in 16 games for the Bulldogs.

Coral Gables Super Regional at Mark Light Field

Boston College: Donovan Casey, So. OF/RHP (2016), Jake Palomaki, So. INF (2016), Nick Sciortino, Jr. C (2016 temp, 2015), Jacob Stevens, Fr. RHP (2016 temp.), Jesse Adams, Sr. LHP (2015 temp.), Joe Cronin, Sr. INF (2014)

            Game 1 vs. No. 2 Miami: June 10, 5 p.m. (ESPN U)

Notes: Though the Hurricanes and Eagles both play in the ACC, this weekend’s Super Regionals will be the first time the teams meet this season. In Boston College’s undefeated run at the Oxford Regional, future Angler Jake Palomaki drove in four runs, three of which came in the Eagles’ first victory over Tulane. Sophomore Donovan Casey scored twice in each game against the Green Wave, while teammate Joe Cronin singled in Nick Sciortino for the eventual championship-clinching run. Jacob Stevens improved his record to 4-3 with his win over Tulane in the regional championship. The right-hander allowed just four hits over five innings. Jesse Adams made two relief appearances for Boston College, one against Tulane and one against Utah. Against the Utes, Adams earned the four-out save after not allowing a hit in 1 and a third innings. The following day, Adams struck out the only two batters he faced as the Eagles clinched the program’s first trip to the Super Regionals.
