Anglers host Gatemen in first game following MLB All-Star Game

CHATHAM, Mass. – There are certain nights that put the tradition of the Chatham Anglers and the Cape Cod Baseball League into perspective. Sometimes now-famous alumni come back to visit the team, or celebrities show up in the stands, or a mind-boggling number of scouts come to watch a particular player. Or on nights like the last two, sometimes Cape League alumni steal the show on the game’s highest level.

On Tuesday evening 15 former Cape Cod League players, including three Chatham A’s alumni, represented their respective leagues at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati for the 2015 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Less than 24 hours after Todd Frazier (Chatham 2005, 2006) electrified his home-town crowd by winning the newly-formatted Home Run Derby in dramatic fashion, he joined fellow Home Run Derby participant Kris Bryant (Chatham 2011) and Tampa Bay Rays closer Brad Boxberger (Chatham 2008) on the same field for the Midsummer Classic.

“It was fantastic to watch [Todd Frazier and Kris Bryant in the Home Run Derby]…” said Manager John Schiffner on the Manager’s Show yesterday. “…And then also Brad Boxberger in the American League bullpen [at the All-Star Game]. It’s just fantastic to see your boys doing that.”

Tonight, there may be more future MLB All-Stars on the field when the Chatham Anglers (16-13) face the Wareham Gatemen (12-16) 7 p.m. at Veterans Field.

Chatham is expected to hand the ball to Jake Godfrey (Louisiana State) for his fourth appearance and second start of the summer. The right-hander’s record remains at an unchanged 0-0, and he brings an eye-catching 1.23 strikeouts per inning into play. During the college season, Godfrey was third on the Tigers with seven wins (to just one loss) and fourth in strikeouts (39).

He will likely be met by Wareham’s Daulton Jefferies (California). The collegiate teammate of Chatham centerfielder Aaron Knapp (California), Jefferies has logged one start in two appearances on the Cape. The right-handed pitcher has relinquished a single earned run and has recorded eight strikeouts in as many innings this summer. He was 6-5 with a 2.92 ERA in 80 innings pitched for the Golden Bears during the college season.

Dominic Cotroneo and Jonny Wincott will have the call live, starting with the Anglers Extra Pregame Show at 6:40 p.m. on TRZ Teamline and at 1-800-846-4700, code 3841.
