A 24-hour road trip adds even more Chatham pitching depth

CHATHAM, Mass. — Driving to the Cape for a vacation from the Boston area is common. Driving to the Cape from Connecticut is less common. Driving from New Jersey, still less. And driving across the entire south-eastern portion of the country from the state of Louisiana—almost unheard of. But that is exactly what newly-arrived Chatham pitcher, Jake Godfrey (Louisiana State), did earlier this week.

“It was rough—it was twenty-four hours straight,” said Godfrey, who made the drive with a friend. “We made a bed in the back, and when he slept I drove, and when I slept he drove.”

If Godfrey’s legs were still stiff from the drive when he took the mound for the first time in an Angler uniform on Friday night, it was impossible to tell. The right-hander originally from New Lenox, Illinois threw two scoreless innings against the West Division-leading Hyannis Harbor Hawks. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two.

“[We’re looking for] exactly that from him,” said Manager John Schiffner. “Come in, throw strikes, and get guys out. He did a nice job tonight.”

Godfrey, who had a 7-1 record with the Tigers this season, will add depth to an already stout Chatham pitching staff. The Angler arms remain first in the Cape League in fewest walks per inning (0.28) and second in team ERA (2.39).

The arm expected to start for the Anglers (9-6) against the Brewster Whitecaps (7-8) tonight will be the left of Daniel Castano (Baylor). In two outings on the Cape, Castano has a 3.60 ERA and a strikeout to walk ratio of 8-5. Brewster is projected to start a right-hander by the name of J.D. Busfield (Loyola Marymount). Busfield is 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA on the summer thus far.

Chatham leads Brewster by a tally of 18 points to 14 points in the standings, and the two East Division foes have split the season series a game apiece to date.
