Murray carries All-Star game MVP award into final stretch

Murray carries All-Star game MVP award into final stretch

It wasn’t the consummate MVP performance. After it, A.J. Murray (Georgia Tech) said that two bloop singles wasn’t really his style. But his base-running abilities made the second a double and there wasn’t much else offense on the East Division side.

Murray was a Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star game MVP — that’s what the record will forever show.

“It’s a very special honor to win the award in the first place,” Murray said after the West Division beat the East Division 5-0 at Doran Park on Sunday night. “It was very special to have my teammates here, have my family here, it’s been a very amazing day and I’m just very blessed to be here.”

Murray, along with righty Jordan Hillyer (Kennesaw State), was one of two Anglers to start in a game that featured little to no offense for John Schiffner’s East team. The first baseman’s two-hit night was a part of an in-house offense effort that collected three of the team’s seven total hits — Ty Moore (UCLA) went 1-for-2 with a single — and put him along side the West’s and Hyannis’ switch-pitching Ryan Perez as the game’s top players. Kyle Davis (Southern California) got the final two outs in the game in a play-for-fun bottom of the ninth, and he was throwing to Anglers catcher Nick Collins (Georgetown).

Before the All-Star game, Murray was tied for second in the league with five home runs with 28 RBIs and a .322 average. And he left the late-July classic with a little something extra, and celebrated the day by hugging and posing for pictures with his family by the media tent. One family member was heard saying, “I’m so proud of this kid, I could cry right now I’m so proud.”

“It really couldn’t happen to a better guy,” Collins said. “I am so happy for A.J., he’s one of the really really good guys.”
