Davis selected 75th overall by Astros

Cal State Fullerton’s J.D. Davis (2013) became the third Angler selected in the MLB Draft on Friday when the Houston Astros selected him with the 75th overall pick.

After Connor Joe was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates and Nick Burdi by the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night, Davis was picked in the third round shortly into the draft’s second day. Davis was a firth-round pick of the Tampa Bay Rays out of high school in 2011, but opted to play in college instead. MLB.com lists him as a third baseman on its draft tracker

Davis, who is from Elk Grove, Calif., and attended Elk Grove High School before heading to Fullerton. In the summer of 2013 he was named the No. 12 prospect in the Cape Cod League by Baseball America by succeeding at the plate and moonlighting on the mound. Davis then settled into the middle of Fullerton’s order and hit .338 with six home runs, 43 RBIs, 16 doubles and 34 runs scored.
