Joe selected by Pirates 39th overall in MLB Draft

Connor Joe (San Diego), who played for Chatham in 2013, was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the 39th overall pick of the MLB Draft on Thursday night. That made him the first Angler selected in the draft.

Joe, who’s from Poway, Calif., and attended Poway High School, just finished his junior season at San Diego where he was a tough out at the plate. After starting in 61 games at first base for San Diego in 2013, Joe was a catcher and first baseman for the Anglers and turned his summer experience into a highly productive junior season. The power hitter hit .367 in 53 starts for the Toreros in 2014, with nine home runs, 51 RBIs and 59 runs scored.

The Pirates selected Joe in the Competitive Balance Round A with a pick they received from the Miami Marlins. Joe has shown the ability to play multiple positions in the field and was able to draw scouts attention with his bat leading up to the draft.
