Dennhardt Silences Braves

by Brian Clark, 06-19-2009

Five days after his first start was shortened due to fog, Boston College's Mike Dennhardt was a man on a mission in Bourne Thursday night. The freshman needed just eighty-one pitches to throw eight-plus innings of one-hit ball, before Vanderbilt's Russell Brewer shut the door, preserving Chatham's 2-0 win and running their record to 5-1.

It seemed as if the Angler bats would come alive early. Leading off the fifth, Steven Brooks doubled into centerfield. However, Braves manager Harvey Shapiro challenged that the bat was illegal, an argument the umpires agreed with, and Brooks was ruled out. John Schiffner notified the umpires that the Anglers would play the rest of the game under protest. As it turns out, the protest wouldn't matter, as the Anglers scored their first run in the sixth against Ken Ferrer. Matt Duffy walked, and a wild pitch to Dean Green moved him to third. Green then grounded out to second, and Duffy took third. A second wild pitch from Ferrer, this time to Joey Terdoslavich allowed Duffy to score the game's first run.

Chatham would add a second run in the seventh, as Jeff Schaus doubled in his first run as an Angler, in the form of teammate Tom Belza. Two runs were all that Mike Dennhardt would need. The righthander didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning, and allowed just three baserunners on the night. The third baserunner, a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth, prompted John Schiffner to summon Russell Brewer from the bullpen. The Vanderbilt righthander walked the first batter he faced. A sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with just one out, but Brewer struck out Raynor Campbell and got Stefen Romero to fly out, ending the game.
