Former Chatham player John Schneider named interim manager of the Toronto Blue Jays

John Schneider has been named interim manager of the Toronto Blue Jays following the team’s firing of Charlie Montoyo.

Schneider posted 19 hits in 20 games for the A's in 2001. Schneider is the third Chatham player to serve as an MLB manager, joining Jim Tracy and Joey Cora.

Schneider caught most of the important games for the 2001 squad, and former manager John Schiffner said they were “his team.” He also helped induct David Bush, who recorded a 0.34 ERA in 2001, into the CCBL Hall of Fame in 2011.

“I always knew if he pursued coaching he would go a long way, whether it was in college or professional ball,” Schiffner said.

Schiffner added that Schneider’s leadership abilities showed right away, helping the A’s reach the 2001 championship, where they lost 2-1 to Wareham.

“You don’t make it to the championship with a bunch of jerks,” Schiffner said. “If anybody was out of line, John took care of it. He let somebody know if they didn’t meet expectations.”

Schneider spent six years in the minors after his one season with Chatham, beginning his career with Toronto affiliate Auburn Doubledays. He joined the Blue Jays’ staff in 2019 as a catching instructor.
