Chatham Check-In: June 4

This week’s Chatham Check-In features two returning Anglers, two Oklahoma State stars and an impact bat on one of the best teams in the majors.

Jeremy Peña (Chatham ‘17)

Peña is off to a hot start in his first season as the Astros’ full-time shortstop. Amongst qualified AL rookies, the Rhode Island native is fifth with 44 games played and leads the group with a .825 OPS. In his last 15 games, Peña hit .339 and slugged exactly .500. Peña played 36 games with the Anglers in 2017. The shortstop hit .228 and was fourth on the A’s with 29 hits. Following his 2017 summer in Chatham, Peña was Houston’s third-round draft choice in 2018.

Jake DeLeo (Chatham ‘21, ‘22)

After his freshman year summer in Chatham, DeLeo returned to Georgia Tech with high expectations. The outfielder started hot, recording 15 total bases in his first five games, but then missed the next 15 contests due to injury. Since returning in late March, DeLeo has 15 hits in 22 games, including a double and triple against Louisville in the ACC tournament. The Connecticuter will return for his second summer with the A’s after the NCAA Tournament.

Trevor Martin (Chatham ‘21)

Martin, one of four Oklahoma State Cowboys on the 2021 Anglers, built off his success last season. The Big 12 All-Freshman has an ERA north of 4.50, as of June 4, and has thrown 40 innings. Martin’s 63 strikeouts are the most of any bullpen arm on the team. In Chatham, the Oklahoma native punched out 27 batters in 19.1 innings. Martin also recorded a 2.79 ERA, tied for the A’s lowest mark amongst pitchers with at least eight appearances.

Cy Nielson (Chatham ‘21, ‘22)

Nielson will also be a second-year Angler in 2022. The left-handed pitcher has been rock-solid for BYU this season. The sophomore has a 3.21 ERA in 33.2 innings, allowing just 12 earned runs through 28 appearances. He’s also pounded the strike zone, striking out 45 batters while walking just seven. Neilson’s earned run average is down almost 2.5 points from his 2021 Cape League stint, where he had a 5.70 ERA in 8 outings.

Caeden Trenkle (Chatham ‘21, ‘22)

For his play as a starter in 50 games last season, Trenkle earned an All-Big 12 honorable mention with Oklahoma State. He tied a team-high by reaching base in 30 consecutive games during the 2021 season, recording seven doubles and 14 RBIs. In 2022, Trenkle has hit .284 with six home runs heading into the NCAA tournament. Trenkle was also picked in the 28th-round by the Chicago White Sox in the 2019 MLB Draft.
