Games 6 and 7 Preview: Wareham at Chatham

Chatham opened the 2022 season with a 1-1-1 record before its first off day. Since then, the Anglers have tried to get back on track, but offensive lapses have prevented them from coming out on top. After defeating Harwich 5-2, Chatham has amounted just six runs in three games.

The Anglers return to Veterans Field for their first of two doubleheader this season. They will face Wareham, who currently sit at second in the West division with a 3-2 record.

Probable Pitchers

Carson Whisenhunt will take the mound first on Monday after starting in last week's season opener. Whisenhunt, who didn't appear in any contest for East Carolina this year due to a suspension, said his arm felt good despite the time away from the mound. He allowed one home run from the Kettleers, which he said was a result of letting the ball 'sit over the plate' too much.

Jacob Watters will start the second game for the Anglers. He came in to relieve Whisenhunt in the season opener after three innings, but like Whisenhunt, he struggled. Watters didn't give up any hits, but five walks allowed the Kettleers to bring in two runs.

Michael Sansone will begin Wareham's pitching in the first game, appearing once for the Gatemen so far this season. Sansone allowed two hits from Hyannis, striking out six batters in four innings of work. He pitched for Bourne last summer, giving up six runs in six games.

Chatham Players to Watch

Jake DeLeo made his debut this season for Chatham on Saturday, recording a team-high two hits in three at-bats against Brewster. DeLeo returns to the Anglers after notching 26 hits and 13 RBIs last year. He had 46 hits in 54 games at Georgia Tech in 2022 with a .254 batting average.

Roc Riggio also made his debut for the Anglers on Saturday against Brewster, coming to Chatham after Oklahoma State was bounced out of the NCAA Tournament. Riggio didn't register any hits, but he hit a high fly ball to center field that almost went the distance. He joins the Anglers following four games in the Stillwater regional where he had four home runs and 17 RBIs.

Wareham Players to Watch

Jack Housinger has appeared in all six games for Wareham this season, sitting second on the team with a .350 batting average. The Xavier senior has recorded seven hits and 2 RBIs this year, including three on Saturday in Wareham's 12-9 loss to Falmouth. Housinger recorded 16 home runs at Xavier in 2022.

Hogan Windish sits directly behind Housinger in batting average at .348, also playing in every game for the Gatemen so far this season. Windish has recorded three doubles and two RBIs, only striking out five times this year. He finished with 80 hits and 16 home runs at UNC Greensboro in 2022.

Stat to Know ' 11

Chatham is last in the Cape Cod Baseball League with 11 runs through its five games. The next closest team is Orleans ' who also sit at a 1-3-1 record ' with 12. This amount is a direct of result of the Anglers inability to get on base, sitting last in the league with 32 total bases in 2022.The Anglers are also tied for last with Hyannis with nine RBIs, and they've recorded three doubles and no triples this season.

Manager Tom Holliday said that the team had tried to analyze pitchers too much from the dugout before going to the batter's box. First baseman Noah Ledford said that Anglers have been getting hits, but they've just been landing straight into a fielder's reach.

Last Time They Played

The Anglers defeated the Gatemen 10-5 last year, holding a runner on second base with less than two outs every inning between the second and the fifth.

'We're getting close, and tonight we looked like a pretty good team,' Chatham manager Tom Holliday said after the win. 'That was a pretty good-looking ball club tonight that we put on the field all over the place.'

Caeden Trenkle began the offensive onslaught with a home run in the first inning, one of three hits he recorded in the outing. Danny Serretti also notched three hits and a home run in the fifth inning.
