Game 3 preview: Falmouth at Chatham

Coming off a second straight road victory, the Chatham Anglers (2-0) will play its first home game of the season at Veterans Field against the Falmouth Commodores (1-0) starting at 7 p.m.

The A’s came back in both of their opening road games this season, overcoming three and four run deficits, respectively. On Monday, Chatham rallied from a 4-1 hole against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks and won off a 10th inning wild pitch that sent Kaden Polcovich (Northwest Florida State) home.

Yesterday, the Anglers went down four in the first two innings to Cotuit, and recovered with two runs off sacrifice flies in the third and a four-run seventh inning. When the Kettleers tied the contest at 6-6, Jamal O’Guinn (USC) walked with the bases loaded in the eighth — the final frame of the game due to darkness.

Both road wins have come from late rallies and solid pitching down the stretch. Now, the A’s will play three games in a row at home.

Probable Pitchers

Jeremy Wu-Yelland (Hawaii), a native of Spokane, Washington, will start on the mound for Chatham and pitch the first three innings of Wednesday’s game. He made the first six starts of his sophomore season before being transition into a relief role. The lefty finished with a 4.86 ERA and allowed just one home run in 46.1 innings.

Zarion Sharpe (UNC Wilmington) struggled with a shoulder injury in 2018, but as a junior, he pitched 57.2 innings for UNCW with 61 strikeouts and a 4.21 ERA. Against Elon on May 12, the righty struck out 10 batters in 6.1 innings while allowing two hits and no runs. Sharpe was drafted in the 19th round of the MLB Draft to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cole Ayers (Kentucky) made 26 relief appearances as a freshman for the Wildcats and didn’t allow an earned run in 19 of them. The right-handed pitcher features a fastball that reaches 93 mph, a changeup below 80 mph and a curveball between 84-86 mph.

For Falmouth, Franco Aleman (Florida International) will get the start. The righty started 12 games and had a 3.97 ERA and a 3-5 record in 2019. In 65.2 innings, Aleman struck out 53 batters.

Players to Watch

Jamal O’Guinn (USC) has four hits in seven at-bats to start the season, including two RBIs and two walks on Tuesday. The right-handed hitter has played first base and designed hitter in his first two games and has two runs.

Drenis Ozuna (Oklahoma Wesleyan) is coming off a game where he reached base three times, and scored on all of them. Ozuna went 2-for-3 against Cotuit after going 0-for-4 in the A’s first game of the season.

Kaden Polcovich (Northwest Florida State) followed a three hit night against Hyannis with three RBIs on Tuesday. He’s reached safely in five of his nine at-bats.

Last season

The two teams split the season series, 2-2, with Falmouth outscoring the A’s, 12-11.
