Chatham, Mass. — Chatham (10-13) faces Wareham (10-12-1) for the third time this season at Clem Spillane Field, Wareham tonight. The Anglers previously swept the Gatemen by tallies of 8-3 and 6-1 in a doubleheader at Veterans Field June 18.
Despite a sixth-inning home run from second baseman Jake Palomaki (Boston College), Chatham fell to Orleans (15-8) 8-2 last night.
The Anglers’ offense fell at the hands of Firebirds starter Ryan Rolison (Mississippi), who struck out eight over five hitless innings.
“When a guy’s throwing three pitches for strikes, [and] hitting all the spots, it’s tough to make something happen,” Palomaki said. “He did a good job keeping us off balance.”
On the mound, five Anglers carried Chatham through the loss.
“I was a little iffy with my mechanics,” said starting pitcher Jeff Belge (St. John’s). “I was leaving balls up in the zone and they weren’t moving as much as they usually do … I couldn’t really get it by the hitters, I just got squared up.”
Relief pitchers Dan Metzdorf (Boston College) and Andre Pallante (California — Irvine) shut down the Firebirds over a scoreless trio of innings late in the game.
Right-handed pitcher Austin Bergner (North Carolina) will start for Chatham tonight. Bergner most recently took the team’s 4-0 shutout of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (12-10-1) July 3, striking out six over six scoreless innings.
“I hope he is as good as he was last week, because last week was about as good as it can get,” said pitching coach Rob Bono. “He’s got it in him — he’s a very good pitcher, he throws hard, [and] he’s got a couple very good pitches.”
Last night, Wareham fell to Yarmouth-Dennis 3-1, after twelve innings of play yielded a 9-9 tie with Falmouth (11-11-1) Saturday.
The Anglers visit Cotuit (14-9) Tuesday for a makeup game following Friday’s rainout.
