On Friday night, the Chatham Anglers (1-0-0) will face the Cotuit Kettleers (1-0-0) at Veterans field. The game will be the home opener of the 2013 season for the Anglers, as Thursdays game against Falmouth was postponed due to weather. The Anglers started the season with a 4-0 victory at Wareham, and look to keep the momentum going.
Behind the victory were scoreless performances from starter
Andrew McGee (Monmouth),
Ryan Leach (Franklin Pierce), and
Andrew Chin (Boston College)
"Its definitely good to have pitching performances like that to start the season," pitcher
Matt Gage (Siena) said. "Sort of sets the tone for the staff and shows us what we need to do."
The Anglers got a stellar debut from McGee in their season opener at Wareham. McGee threw five scoreless innings, only allowed three hits and one walk, and struck out nine. This past season for Monmouth University, he was named the NEC conference pitcher of the year.
"All I was trying to do was throw a lot of strikes attack the strike zone, and give the team a chance to win McGee said. I wanted to keep the momentum going from my season, so I kept my routine and tried to keep doing what I was in."
Due to the rainout on Thursday, the Anglers had to experience an early season off day. Catcher
Hunter Redman (Midland- Texas Tech) doesnt believe that will dampen the teams momentum from Wednesday.
"I dont think it'll affect us really," Redman said. "We just want to play, keep it up, and not have any setbacks."
Redman will get his first start of the season at catcher against the Kettleers.
Aaron Garza (Houston) will make his debut for the Anglers. For Houston in 2013, he posted a 5-5 record in 13 starts, with a 3.88 ERA and 43 strikeouts. From the short time that he has known him, Gage likes what he sees from Garza.
"He is a very quiet and humble guy," Gage said. "From what I have seen, he has a lot of skill."
Taking the mound for Cotuit against the Anglers will be left-hander Ben Smith. In his sophomore season for Coastal Carolina, Smith posted a 2.23 ERA in 16 starts, striking out 83 and holding opposing batters to a .219 batting average.
Despite this success, the Angler lineup will look to spark their offense and build off of the momentum from Wednesdays victory.
"All of the guys are getting along really well, we all just enjoy coming to the ballpark each day and playing," Redmond said.
