Chatham to Battle Archrival Orleans for Fourth Time
Chatham returns to Veterans Field to take on Orleans for the fourth time this season. The Anglers (15-16) have 30 points this season and have a four point (two win) lead over Brewster for the fourth playoff spot in the Eastern Division. The Firebirds (18-13) are coming off a 3-1 loss to Bourne on Sunday and are in third place in the East with 36 points. Chatham is 1-2 against Orleans this season, falling 5-4 on July 3, prevailing 5-1 on July 4 and losing 7-2 on July 19. Monday's game was supposed to take place on July 18 but was rescheduled due to a rainout.

The Anglers lost 4-2 to the Hyannis Harbor Hawks on Sunday night, dropping their fifth straight game. Franklin Pierce's Ryan Thompson (1-1, 2.31 ERA) suffered the loss for Chatham (5.2IP, 7H, 3ER, 2BB, 3K). With his slurve baffling hitters and his fastball working on both sides of the plate, the junior was a victim of poor run support.

"Ryan threw very well tonight," said manager John Schiffner. "He looked fine out there. We didn't get him enough runs. Ryan deserved to win tonight with the way he pitched."

Chatham totaled six hits on Sunday and no player recorded more than one. The Anglers were carried at the dish by first baseman Alex Calbick (Maine) who hit a solo home run in the second inning and designated hitter Dale Carey (Miami) who hit an RBI single in the fifth.

Despite the five-game losing streak, Schiffner remains highly optimistic about his team's chances to make the playoffs.

"We're right there," he said. "We need to get Andrew Knapp back in the lineup and we need a couple of other guys to step up and I think we'll be fine."

Stetson's Kurt Schluter (1-1, 4.22 ERA) will make his fifth start of the season for Chatham. Schluter was given a loss in his last start on July 16 against the Wareham Gatemen (4.1IP, 4ER, 6H, 2BB, 4K).

Orleans will send Maryland southpaw Jimmy Reed (2-0, 4.01 ERA) to the mound against the Anglers. Reed was credited with his second win of the season in his most recent outing against Cotuit on July 16 (7IP, 1ER, 3H, 2BB, 6K).
