Chatham's abysmal month continued Saturday night with a loss at Yarmouth-Dennis to the Red Sox by a score of 4-2. The Anglers have now lost six straight, nine of their last ten, and carry a record of 3-12 for the month of July. Chatham's 2010 record now stands at 12-16-1, good for last place in the Eastern Division.
Both teams' starters pitched well through the first four innings of play, though righties Derek Self (Louisville) and Tommy Toledo (Florida) allowed a combined eleven hits. The Anglers struck first in the top of the fifth after right fielder Peter Verdin (Georgia) was struck by a pitch to lead off the inning, and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Jacob Stallings (UNC). Left fielder Jason Martin (San Jose St.) would single in the next at-bat to put men on the corners before a walk by Brian Humphries (Pepperdine) loaded the bases with just one out. Shortstop Joe DePinto (USC) stepped in for the next at-bat, and was struck by yet another pitch from Toledo to plate Verdin and put Chatham on top 1-0. Joe Pavone would single two batters later to bring Martin home and give the Anglers a 2-0 lead.
The Red Sox wouldn't play from behind for long, striking back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Center fielder Caleb Ramsey (Houston) bunted his way aboard to lead off the inning, followed up by a single off the bat of third baseman Tyler Hanover (LSU). Two batters later, Stewart Ijames (LSU) would single in a run, followed in the next at-bat by an RBI sacrifice fly from designated hitter Matt Jensen (Cal. Poly) to tie the score at two apiece.
Lefty reliever Aaron Gates (Pepperdine) would come on to start the seventh inning for the Anglers in relief of Self, and allow a leadoff triple by Ramsey, who would be brought home in the next at-bat on an RBI sacrifice fly by Hanover to put Y-D ahead 3-2. The Red Sox would tack on one more run in the eighth after first baseman Jordan Ribera (Fresno St.) walked to lead off the inning. Joe Zimmerman (New Orleans) was brought on to relieve Gates, and after inducing a groundout, allowed an RBI single by catcher Ben McMahan (Florida) to put the Red Sox on top 4-2 for the eventual victory.
