Anglers Drop Fifth Straight, Fall to Firebirds 2-0
by Anglers Media Team Friday, July 16, 2010
Four Orleans pitchers combined to limit the Anglers to two hits in a 2-0 victory at Eldredge Park. The Anglers were held hitless through the first eight innings before catcher Joe Pavone (Connecticut) led off the ninth with a single to center off of closer Marcus Stroman (Duke). The Anglers were able to load the bases on two separate occasions, but could not breakthrough against the Firebirds. The Anglers loaded the bases against Orleans starter Cameron Hobson (Dayton) in the top of the sixth on an error and two walks. Burny Mitchem (Dayton) came in on relief of Hobson and got Peter Verdin (Georgia) to line out to first to end the inning. The Anglers again loaded the bases in the ninth against Stroman, but Jason Martin (San Jose State) lined into a double play, ending the contest.
The Firebirds broke up a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the fifth against Chatham starter Kevin Vance (Connecticut). Riccio Torrez (Arizona State) led off the inning with a double to left and stood on third with one down when Will Piwnica-Worms (Duke) laid down a bunt. Vance raced off the mound and appeared to get the ball to Pavone in time to cut down Torrez, but Torrez was ruled safe, prompting Chatham manager John Schiffner to dispute the call. After a heated exchange with home plate umpire Dan Salce, Schiffner was ejected. Orleans added to lead in the bottom of the seventh as Piwnica-Worms walked with two outs, stole second and came around to score on a single by Shon Roe (Loyola Marymount) off of Chatham reliever Phil Schreiber (Iowa).
