The Wareham Gatemen came to town Tuesday night for a makeup at Veteran's Field, after the second game of a scheduled doubleheader with the Anglers last month was fogged out, and led 4-1 in the seventh before the rain came and shortened the contest. The Anglers' record now stands at 12-12-1, good for fourth best in the Eastern Division.
The Gatemen struck early for the first run of the ballgame after right fielder Jon Smith (Tenn-Wesleyan) singled with one away, stole second, and came home on an RBI single by Max Muncy (Baylor) to put Wareham up 1-0.
The Anglers would even the score in the second, with Mark Ginther (Oklahoma St.) returning to the lineup after a brief bout with tendinitis, and blasting a solo home run to lead off the inning, tying the ballgame 1-1. That tie wouldn't last long as the Gatemen would take the lead in the next half inning after center fielder John Andreoli (UConn) singled to lead off the inning, stole second, and came home on an RBI single by catcher Tony Caldwell (Auburn) to give Wareham a 2-1 lead.
Another run would come across for the Gatemen in the fourth, after Tyler Bream (Liberty) singled to lead off the inning, and came around to score on an RBI single by Andreoli. Wareham would tack on one more run in the sixth after designated hitter L.J. Mazzilli (UConn) singled to lead off the inning against reliever Joe Zimmerman (New Orleans), in relief of starter Marc Zecchino (Va. Tech). Mazzilli would steal second, advance to third on a ground out by second baseman Adam McClain (Memphis), and come home on a wild pitch by Zimmerman to put the Gatemen up 4-1.
Greg Larson (Florida) came on to start the seventh and retired the side in order with a ground out and two strikeouts. During the inning break. the rain, which had been falling at a slow and steady pace during the top half of the inning, picked up significantly and halted play. The game would be called due to unplayable field conditions, along with lightning and thunder.
The Anglers head back out on the road Wednesday night to take on the Falmouth Commodores, who carry in an 11-14 record.
