Anglers Take Game 1 of Doubleheader, Game 2 Fogged Out
After a two-game losing streak the Anglers bounced back Sunday afternoon in Game One of a scheduled doubleheader to top the visiting Wareham Gatemen by a score of 5-2. Starter Derek Self (Louisville) earned the win, his second, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk through six innings of work. Game Two was shaping up to be a pitching duel before the fog rolled in thick. After a thirty minute delay, the game was called.

Game One started in favor of the Gatemen as designated hitter George Springer (UConn) blasted a solo home run with two outs in the top of the first to put his squad ahead 1-0. It was the third home run for Springer on the season, his second against the Anglers.

The Wareham lead would hold into the third, before third baseman Mark Ginther (Oklahoma St.) led off the home half of the frame with a double. Jason Martin (San Jose St.) then reached in the next at-bat on a throwing error by pitcher Jack Armstrong (Vanderbilt) with Ginther advancing to third. Brian Humphries (Pepperdine) followed with an RBI single. Stephen Perez (Miami) laid down a bunt in the next at-bat and reached after Armstrong attempted to catch Martin at third and missed the glove of third baseman Tyler Bream (Liberty) allowing Martin to score, Humphries to advance to third, and Perez to advance to second. After Rick Oropesa (USC) struck out swinging, catcher Joe Pavone (UConn) flew out to center to bring Humphries home from third, giving Chatham a 4-1 lead at the end of the third.

Wareham would cut into the three-run deficit with a run in the fifth after Anthony Toth (Michigan) led off the inning with a single, and after advancing to second on a single by John Smith (Tenn. - Wesleyan), was brought around to score on a single by Springer to cut the Chatham lead in half and bring the score to 4-2.

The Anglers would tack on a run in the fifth after Perez walked with one out, advanced to second after Oropesa walked in the next at-bat, then came around to score after Pavone singled to left and Wareham left fielder Alex Dickerson (Indiana) bobbled the ball and allowed Perez to cross the plate, giving Chatham the 5-2 lead.

The Anglers' record stands at 8-4-1 with the suspension of the second game, which is scheduled to be replayed at Veteran's Field -- in nine innings -- on July 13 at 7PM.

Chatham gets a day off on Monday then welcomes Cotuit to town for a 7pm start Tuesday night at Veteran's Field.
