Despite a solid first outing from A.J. Puckett, Anglers fall to Braves, 8-2

Assistant Coach Travis Beausoleil calls it the “freebee war.” It’s the total number of errors, walks, and any other second chances that a team gives because of mistakes. On Saturday night, the Chatham Anglers (6-4) lost both the “freebee war” and the game, 8-2, to the Bourne Braves (4-6-1).

“We did miserably in the ‘freebee war’ tonight,” said Manager John Schiffner. “You can’t give away runs like that.”

Pepperdine teammates A.J. Puckett and Aaron Barnett were the starting pitcher-catcher pairing Saturday.

Four Chatham fielding errors allowed four unearned Bourne runs to eventually cross the plate.

A.J Puckett (Pepperdine) made his first Cape Cod Baseball League start for Chatham. Puckett gave up three runs (one earned) in three and two thirds innings. He also had one strikeout and one walk in the outing.

“I thought he threw pretty well tonight for his first time coming back out,” said catcher Aaron Barnett, who also catches Puckett at Pepperdine. “He made the pitches he needed to make.”

Schiffner likewise thought the outing was a solid return to action.

"There were a lot of good things there," said Schiffner.

A host of other Chatham pitchers followed Puckett, including a somewhat unexpected face late in the game.

In the ninth inning, two-way player, Trenton Brooks (Nevada), pitched for the first time this summer. Brooks, who usually leads off and plays outfield, gave up one earned run and struck out a batter.

“I thought it was a pretty good performance,” said Schiffner. “He left one pitch up, and the guy did what you’re supposed to do with it, but that’s a very workable arm. He’s going to help us a lot.”

The Anglers offense struck early and threatened throughout, but they only left a lasting scoreboard mark in the second inning. Aaron Knapp (California) led the inning off with a walk, and Luke Persico (UCLA) would eventually drive him in. Two batters later, Trenton Brooks delivered an RBI single of his own to bring Persico home.

Jonathan Teaney (San Diego), Garret Williams (Oklahoma State), and Jeff Paschke (Southern California) combined to pitch the other four and one third innings for the Anglers. The bullpen trio relinquished four runs (two earned) in the combined effort. They also managed six strikeouts to a single walk.

For Garrett Williams, the appearance was his first of this summer, but he pitched for Chatham all summer in 2014.

“If he can put everything together, it’s special,” said Schiffner. “He has a chance to be special.”

The Anglers next visit the Hyannis Harbor Hawks for a doubleheader on Sunday. The first game will start at 3 p.m., and the second will follow thirty minutes after the conclusion of the first.
