Anglers trying for third straight

Three is a streak. That’s exactly what the Chatham Anglers (6-4) are set to go for when they host the Bourne Braves (3-6-1) at 7 p.m. tonight. After winning back-to-back games off the efforts of outstanding pitching, solid defense, and timely hitting, the Anglers will try to follow the same formula to win their third in a row.

“We got a 1-0 win, and then we were down for most of the night and got a 4-1 win,” said Manager John Schiffner. “The guys know they can win, and that’s a good thing.”

The Chatham pitching staff has surrendered only one run in the past 18 innings. Over that time they have set 17 batters down on strikes while walking three, and opponents are hitting .206 against them.

The pitcher expected to attempt to add to this trend for Chatham is A.J. Puckett (Pepperdine). Puckett has not pitched in the Cape Cod Baseball League, but he threw 81 strikeouts to 31 walks and had a 7-5 record for Pepperdine this year. Aaron Barnett (Pepperdine), one of three Chatham catchers, also caught Puckett during the college season.

Puckett’s night will be made easier if the Angler offense provides like they did in the bottom of the seventh inning on Friday night. After being quiet for most of the game, the bats were finally able to get rolling in that frame.

“The hitters made some adjustments and got some good at-bats,” said Schiffner. “We got a huge hit from Will Craig (Wake Forest), and there you go.”

The four-run breakthrough also featured RBI singles from Aaron Knapp (California) and Zack Short (Sacred Heart).

The probable puzzle the Anglers will need to solve comes in the form of Ryan Smoyer (Notre Dame). The right-hander gave up two earned runs in four and a third innings in his first start against Yarmouth-Dennis. During the college season he was 9-1 with a 2.27 ERA over 79.1 innings pitched for the Fighting Irish.

The live broadcast of tonight’s game begins at 6:40 p.m. with the Anglers Extra Pregame Show. It can be viewed or heard on TRZ Teamline, or heard toll-free at 1-800-846-4700, code 3841.
