Red Sox Stun A's with Six in Eighth to Tie

by Kyle Whitehead, 06-28-2007

Red Sox Stun A's with Six in Eighth to Tie Everything seemed to be going right for Chatham. Charles Brewer (UCLA) threw six seemingly effortless innings and the offense produced from top to bottom to spot the A's a 7-1 lead after seven and a half.

Then the Red Sox bats woke up.

In the bottom of the eighth, Y-D scored six runs on six hits to tie the score at 7 before the game was called due to darkness Thursday night at Red Wilson Field.

The big blow was a Jason Castro (Stanford) three-run homer off A's reliever Greg Shannon (San Jose St.) that brought the Red Sox even. Castro was the first batter Shannon faced and the Cardinal greeted him with a moon shot over the right centerfield fence.

Earlier in the inning, Y-D rallied off Jeff Lorick (UVA). Lorick surrendered a leadoff home run to Gordon Beckham (Georgia) in the seventh but then bounced back to retire the side. In the eighth, Lorick got the leadoff man before allowing the next five batters to reach base and giving way to Shannon.

Five of the six Red Sox runs in the eighth were charged to Lorick.

Chatham jumped out in front with three runs in the top of the second. Catcher Gregg Glime (Baylor) had a two-run double to plate the first two runs and second basemen Andrew Crisp (South Carolina) drove in Glime with a single.

The way Charles Brewer (UCLA) was pitching, it looked like that might be all the A's needed. Brewer shutout Y-D in his six innings of work, allowing only two base hits and striking out four.

The A's added two insurance runs in the fifth, one in the seventh and another in the eighth to build the 7-1 lead. Little did they know seven runs would not be enough to beat Y-D on this day.

Chatham will look to bounce back in Brewster tomorrow at 5pm. Cliff Springston (Arkansas) throws for Chatham while Matt Couch (San Diego) goes for the Whitecaps.
