McGee on the Mound as Chatham Looks to Rebound Against Y-D

by Chris Jones, 07-10-2013

McGee on the Mound as Chatham Looks to Rebound Against Y-D The patented Chatham Anglers (15-7-1) late inning magic fell just short on Tuesday, as they fell 4-3 to Hyannis (14-7) at Veterans Field, snapping the Anglers five-game winning streak.

The Anglers have gone an impressive 6-2 during that stretch, and have won eight of their last 10 games. Chatham still has the league's best record at 15-7-1, and sit in first place of the Eastern Division, seven points (3.5 games) ahead of the second-place Harwich Mariners.

Despite last night's loss, Manager John Schiffner is still incredibly impressed with the current state of the team.

"We will be fine," Schiffner said. "It is one loss. We have a great team, so we just need to come out and play tomorrow."

win in his fifth start of the season.
Chatham will make it's final trip of the regular season to Red Wilson Field to take on the Y-D Red Sox.

In their last trip to Y-D on June 25, the Anglers had to settle for a disappointing 5-5 tie. Chatham held a 5-3 lead with the Red Sox down to their final out, but D.J Stewart (Florida State) blasted a two-run homerun to tie the game. The game was called due to darkness after the tenth inning.

In the last meeting between these two teams, Chatham enacted little revenge with some late inning heroics of their own, beating the Red Sox in walk-off fashion on an RBI single from Landon Lassiter (North Carolina)

Schiffner will give the ball to the staff ace so far this season in Andrew McGee (Monmouth), looking to end this nine-game stretch before their off-day on Thursday.

McGee has had an impressive start for the Anglers. In 22 innings pitched, he has yet to record a loss and has a 1.22 ERA in four starts, picking up 23 strikeouts along the way.

In his last start, McGee gave up five hits and two runs over four innings pitched against Orleans. McGee did not factor into the decision, as Chatham came back and beat the Firebirds 7-2.

The Chatham pitching staff is still the best in the league, holding a 2.56 team ERA in 204.1 total innings pitched.

On the mound for the Red Sox will be right-hander Daniel Savas (Illinois State). On the season, Savas has appeared in four games, and has a 2.02 ERA with 10 strikeouts in 13.1 innings pitched.

For Illinois State in 2013, Savas held an impressive 10-0 record with a 1.79 ERA in 15 starts for the Redbirds, striking out 98 in 100.1 innings pitched.

With no game tomorrow, Schiffner and the team would like to go into the off day on a winning note.

"There is no doubt that you want to go into the day off with a win," Schiffner said.

First pitch at 5 p.m. Tune into the Anglers Extra Pregame Show at 4:40 p.m. for live coverage with broadcasters Brandon Liebhaber and Keith Zubrow at TRZ Teamline or call 1-800-846-4700, code 3841.
