Red-Hot Angler Offense Looks to Continue Against Brewster

by Chris Jones, 07-07-2013

Red-Hot Angler Offense Looks to Continue Against Brewster The Chatham Angler (13-6-1) offense exploded for 10 runs and 13 hits on Saturday night as they downed the Harwich Mariners 10-6. With the team on a roll, Manager John Schiffner like where they are at right now.

"This is special," Schiffner said. "To the guys' credit, they are doing everything we are asking them to do, and it is paying off with some wins. It is fabulous."

The Anglers have ridden their offense to three straight victories. In those games, the Chatham bats have exploded for 25 runs and 36 hits, with 17 of those runs coming in the first four innings.

The team is now third in the league in total hitting, with a .257 team batting average and 101 runs scored on the season.

Dante Flores (USC), in his second year as an Angler, continues to lead the offense with his impressive season at the plate. He is second in the league in total hitting with a .365 batting average, 12 RBI, 12 runs scored, six doubles, and a .577 slugging percentage, which is second best in the league.

Dante Flores has led the Angler offense
with a .365 batting average on the season.

"I have been through this before, which has really helped me in my approach and everything," Flores said. "The game slows down when you have been through this before."

Flores and the Anglers will look to continue their hot-hitting as they return home to Veterans Field Sunday night to take on the Brewster Whitecaps (6-13), as Chatham kicks off a three game homestand.

On the mound for Chatham will be Andrew Chin (Boston College). Chin is still undefeated on the season, but has struggled as of late, giving up seven runs in his past 9.1 innings pitched.

On the season, Chin holds a 3.63 ERA and 12 strikeouts in four appearances for the Anglers.

Chin's last start came against Brewster, where he struck out two, allowed seven hits, three earned runs in 3.2 innings pitched, but did not factor in the final decision. Chatham would go on to win that game 7-3.

The Whitecaps sit in last place in the Eastern Division, but have won their last three games. Their last victory came in walkoff fashion, as Brewster defeated Bourne 5-4 on an RBI double from catcher Trent Woodward (Fresno State).

The last time Brewster visited Veterans Field, it was Chatham who would come away with a 5-4 walk-off victory. It was Flores who delivered with the RBI single that won the game for the Anglers on June 15.
The losing pitcher in that game was Jonathan Keller (Alabama), who will get the start tonight for Brewster. Keller has made two appearances against the Anglers this season, the last one being a start in the 7-3 Chatham victory, where Keller only lasted one inning and gave up three runs.

On the season, Keller has a 2.70 ERA in five appearances for the Whitecaps, striking out 11 and walking five in 10 innings pitched.

Searching for their fourth straight win tonight, Flores feels like the team is at an all-time confidence high.

"We have a lot of confidence right now," Flores said. "We have to stay humble and keep working every day, but it is a great feeling to be doing so well right now."

First pitch at 7 p.m. Tune into the Anglers Extra Pregame Show at 6:40 p.m. for live coverage with broadcasters Brandon Liebhaber and Keith Zubrow at TRZ Teamline or call 1-800-846-4700, code 3841.
