Chatham Looks to Push Win Streak to Five Against Wareham
The Chatham Anglers (15-11) are back at Veterans Field on Monday night to face the Wareham Gatemen (11-15) for the second time this season. Chatham has not played the Gatemen since the season opener on June 14, a 7-5 victory at Spillane Field. Since that meeting, the Anglers have undergone a serious transformation and are playing their best baseball of the summer.

On Sunday night, the Chatham Anglers extended their winning streak to four games, defeating the Falmouth Commodores 3-1. Down 1-0, the Anglers scored three unanswered runs in the final three innings. Thanks to more strong pitching, Chatham gave up one earned run on six hits.

"Our pitching staff did an outstanding job again," said manager John Schiffner. "They're just doing a great job of keeping us in these games."

Pepperdine's Aaron Brown (1-0, 2.16 ERA) tossed two scoreless innings and recorded two strikeouts to earn his first win of the season for Chatham. While Brown has cooled off of late at the dish, the freshman continues to thrive on the mound and has not allowed an earned run in his last two outings.

"Our guys are working hard with Scott Winterburn in the bullpen," said Schiffner. "They're listening to his instructions and he's giving them opportunities and it's paying off. That was a great job by Brownie."

Boston College outfielder Tom Bourdon was the hero for the Anglers on Sunday, going 2 for 2 after entering the game as a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh. Bourdon's first hit, a single to right field, sent Michigan State's John Martinez to third base and drew an overthrow, which allowed the Spartan to tie the game. In the top of the ninth, Bourdon smoked a one-out ground rule double to center field, allowing Maine's Alex Calbick to advance to third base.

"Tommy has not had the best summer up to this point and then he ripped that big double," said Schiffner. "The whole dugout went crazy for him. That is what team is all about."

Chatham took control of the game in the next two at-bats after Calbick scored on a wild pitch and third baseman Alex Chittenden (Louisville) knocked an RBI single to right.

"We're excited to coach these kids," said Schiffner. "The kids are having a lot of fun right now. Let's roll and see what happens. We're on a great run right now and I've just told the guys to keep doing what they're doing."

Stetson's Kurt Schluter (1-1, 2.65 ERA) will make the start for Chatham. Schluter has not made a start since his no-decision against Brewster on June 30, where he allowed two runs on five hits in six innings. In Schluter's last outing on July 4 against Orleans, the 6-3 right-hander struck out one batter in a scoreless inning of relief. The sophomore has issued only three walks in 17 innings this summer.

For Wareham, Amherst southpaw Frederick Shepard (1-2, 4.96 ERA) will take the rubber. Shepard suffered a loss in his last start against Brewster on July 8 after allowing two earned runs on four hits in four innings pitched. In four starts this season. the Massachuetts native has struck out 17 batters and issued 13 walks. Since his first start on June 17 against Cotuit, Shepard has failed to earn a win.
