Anglers to take on Cotuit in Home Opener

by George Barclay, 06-15-2012

Anglers to take on Cotuit in Home Opener The wait is over, Cape League fans. On Friday night, the Chatham Anglers (1-0) return to Veterans Field for their home opener. The Anglers will take on the Cotuit Ketteleers (1-0), one of the Western Division's more storied teams. Coming off a win in the first game of the season, Chatham is riding high.

"I thought it was a team effort from everybody," said assistant coach Pat McGee, now in his seventh year with the team. "Monday was the first time in a while that the guys had seen live pitching. I expected that the guys would make the adjustments and we got the result we wanted."

On Thursday night, the Anglers rallied back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Wareham Gatemen 7-5. Chatham tallied seven hits on the night and was led offensively by right fielder Aaron Brown (Pepperdine), who went 2-3 with two doubles and first basemen Andrew Knapp (California), who went 2-5 with two RBI. Right-hander Scott Frazier (Pepperdine) (1-0) was credited with the win for the Anglers. Frazier was able to overcome four hit batsmen and pitched five strong innings, only allowing one run and striking out five hitters.

"I thought Scott was outstanding. He controlled the count for the majority of the game. What you saw there was typical of a college baseball game. He faced a little bit of adversity and ultimately prevailed. That's part of his development as a pitcher and what he'll see in the Cape League," said McGee about Frazier's performance.

At Veterans Field, Chatham will face a team that also began their season in the win column. Cotuit defeated the Hyannis Harbor Hawks 3-2 on Thursday night in the team's home opener. The Kettleers were led by outfielder Patrick Biondi (Michigan) who went 2-2 with two RBI and outfielder Billy Bereszniewicz (Binghamton) who went 1-2. Right-hander Dan Slania (1-0) (Notre Dame) earned the win for Cotuit, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings and striking out two batters. Right-hander Kyle Finnegan (Texas State) was given a no-decision for the Kettleers. Finnegan pitched six innings, allowing two runs, walking two hitters and striking out four. On Friday night, Cotuit will be led on the mound by lefty Adam McCreery (Arizona State). This season McCreery went 2-0 in five starts for the Sun Devils, posting a 1.32 ERA and 14 strikeouts.

For the Anglers, right-hander Kurt Schluter (Stetson) will take the rubber in their home opener. Schluter went 5-3 this season for Stetson, posting a 5.45 ERA and striking out 53 hitters.

"He's highly competitive. He's a good athlete. We like the matchup. Cotuit is a team that likes to run a lot. He has great control of baserunners. It's a great opportunity for him to grow as a player," said McGee.

Again, a balanced attack will be crucial for the Anglers, especially against a team well-stocked on the mound like the Kettleers. Cotuit only gave up two runs against Hyannis on Thursday night and the team's bullpen was lights out in the later innings. For the Anglers to come out on top on Friday night, they will have to provide Schluter with some run support early in the game. Although this task may sound simple to the casual fan, Pat McGee knows the opposite is true.

"Sometimes what everybody forgets out here is that the team in the other dugout is trying to score too and that they have good players. It's not always going to be an easy game."
