2012 MLB Draft Results
The three-day 2012 MLB First Year Player Draft concluded Wednesday with 27 Chatham Anglers getting the call, highlighted by Richie Shaffer and Pat Light on Day 1. Four more were slated to play for Chatham in 2012: Mark Bordonaro, Anthony Vega and Tony Wieber, and Kris Hall, but all signed contracts before making their Anglers debut.

In the 20 years that John Schiffner has managed the Chatham Anglers, the team has produced first round draft picks in 17 of them. This tradition of excellence continued in the 2012 MLB Draft with Clemson's Richie Shaffer (Chatham '11) getting selected by the Tampa Bay Rays as the 25th pick and Monmouth's Pat Light ('11) being taken by the Boston Red Sox as the 37th pick in supplemental round. Of the 30 Anglers taken in this year's draft, 15 were picks in the first 10 rounds. Highlighting this group of 15 are Shaffer, Oklahoma City College's Dane Phillips ('11), UCLA's Beau Amaral (10-'11), and South Carolina's Evan Marzilli ('11).

Last year for the Anglers, Shaffer excelled as both the team's most powerful hitter and first baseman. In 36 games, Shaffer hit .263 with with 6 home runs and 22 RBIs for Chatham and only committed three errors. Shaffer also won the Cape Cod League's Home Run Derby at Fenway Park, hitting six home runs. In addition, Shaffer will join former Chatham standout Evan Longoria ('05) in Tampa Bay. According to Baseball Prospectus and ESPN's Kevin Goldstein, Shaffer is considered to be the best college hitter in the draft.

Dane Phillips also had an extremely productive year for Chatham last summer as a catcher and designated hitter. In 41 games, Phillips hit .349 with 4 home runs and 34 RBIs. Late in the season, Phillips had a chance to win the triple crown. Phillips was one of three Anglers selected in the second round by the San Diego Padres and will be joined by Miami's Stephen Perez ('10-'11) and Michigan State's Tony Wieber ('12).

Acting as the Bruins' leadoff hitter and starting center fielder, Beau Amaral was able to take advantage of his two years in Chatham. While Amaral's numbers were not mind blowing, hitting .232 and .242 in 2010 and 2011, he is hitting .320 with 4 home runs and 45 RBIs for UCLA this year and has played a major role in the team advancing the the NCAA Super Regional. Amaral was selected in the seventh round by the Cincinatti Reds.

Another Angler making waves on the national level is outfielder Evan Marzilli. Despite hitting just .159 in 20 games for Chatham last summer, Marzilli has been very productive for the two-time defending national champion Gamecocks. Marzilli is hitting .288 with 2 home runs and 30 RBIs for South Carolina this season, who have once again advanced to the NCAA Super Regional. Marzilli was taken in the eighth round by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
