A West Coast Bias and Some Southern Flair

by Anglers Media Team, 04-08-2011

A West Coast Bias and Some Southern Flair Take a look at the 2011 Anglers roster. After a brief glance, it will quickly become evident that the names that are set to make the trip to Chatham this summer are -- by a great majority -- mostly associated with schools located on the West Coast or in the Southern states.

Representing 15 total schools, 26 of the 30 players on this year's roster attend classes and occupy the diamond at schools in California, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Georgia and Kentucky.

Anglers fans will recognize a few names from some of those schools, welcoming back UCLA's Beau Amaral, San Jose State's Zack Jones, Miami's Stephen Perez, and North Carolina's Chris Munnelly.

Some new names, though, deserve an introduction; especially considering their performances thus far this season.

Take Hudson Randall for instance. The 20-year old right hander out of the University of Florida, over seven starts with two complete games, has posted an infinitesimal 0.54 ERA for the Gators, with a perfect 5-0 record. Averaging just over seven innings per start, the 6'3 hurler has walked just ONE batter over 49.2 innings of work.

Another power arm wreaking havoc south of the Mason Dixon line is Georgia Tech's Buck Farmer. A 6'3 righty like Randall, Farmer has struck out 46 batters in 42.2 innings over seven starts. Boasting a 5-1 record, his 2.11 ERA is still just third-best among the Ramblin' Wreck's starting rotation, behind 2010 Cape League standouts Jed Bradley (Wareham) and Mark Pope (Falmouth).

And then there's Tim Cooney, a left hander out of Wake Forest who, despite a decidedly slow start with a 4-6 record and a 5.49 ERA his freshman year, still finished the 2010 season in the top 10 in games started (13, T-2nd), innings pitched (80.1, 6th) and strikeouts (54, 10th) by a freshman in Wake Forest history . This season, he's the Demon Deacons' best starter, posting a 2.11 ERA with a 3-1 record over seven starts.

Providing run support for Cooney in Winston-Salem is first baseman Matt Conway. The ambidextrous power hitter (Bats Right, Throws Left) has driven in 28 runs with six homers and a .262 average. Conway could also be used out of the bullpen for the Anglers, having made seven appearances on the mound in 2010.

And those are just a few of the southern boys. A familiar face and a new name representing the Golden State are powering their way through the 2011 season before they make the trek from California to the Cape.

The familiar face belongs to Zack Jones. The 2010 Angler continues his Ruthian tear through the Western Athletic Conference both at the plate and on the mound. Appearing in 30 total games, Jones has posted a .350 batting average with 28 hits and 16 RBI in 80 at-bats with a .948 OPS (On-base percentage + Slugging percentage), and a 1.96 ERA with 36 strikeouts over 23 innings of relief.

The new face belongs to Kris Bryant; a power-hitting, speedy third baseman from San Diego University. The 6'5 Torero has blasted six home runs with a .301 batting average in 93 at-bats, and has stolen 11 bases in 12 attempts.

If the performances of these soon-to-be-Anglers are any indication, fans at Veterans Field will have plenty to cheer about as the quest for a sixth League Championship begins.

Stick with us at www.chathamanglers.com all offseason long as we continue to highlight the performances of these young men, in anticipation of another outstanding summer-season on the Cape!
