Anglers Strand 14 Runners, Lose to Harwich in 11 Innings
Derek Self (Louisville) pitched eight shutout innings for the Anglers Saturday night against Harwich at Veteran's Field, but his impressive performance was matched by the lefty-heavy staff sent to the mound by the Mariners, as the contest went to extra innings for the fifth time this season. After putting up a 3-0-1 record in extra-inning affairs on the season, the Anglers fell in eleven by a score of 1-0.

Self took to the mound opposite Harwich starter Lex Rutledge (Samford), and got through the first seven Mariners unscathed. A hard-hit ball to the gap in left-center off the bat of second baseman Andrew Ciencin (NC State), however, was just a little too far for even the outstanding range of Anglers' left fielder Jason Martin (San Jose St.) and dropped in for a hit. He would surrender just five hits and two walks through his eight innings of work, and help his cause defensively as well after allowing a leadoff walk to Ronnie Richardson (Central Florida) in the sixth. Brian Goodwin (UNC) attempted to lay down a bunt in the next at-bat, but instead popped up to the third base side. Self, coming down off the mound, dove near the third base line and made the catch, turning quickly to first and doubling off Richardson.

Rutledge pitched well through his six scoreless innings of work allowing just three hits and two walks. Will Locante (Tennessee) and Braden Kapyten (Kentucky) combined for three scoreless innings of relief to close out the ninth, allowing two hits and a walk. Kevin Berry ended regulation with one inning of scoreless relief, retiring the side in order after allowing a leadoff walk to Levi Michael (UNC). Berry would then retire the side in order in the tenth, followed by a scoreless bottom half of the frame pitched by right handed reliever Matty Ott (LSU).

Richardson led off the eleventh inning with a single that took a bad hop up and over the glove of Anglers shortstop Stephen Perez (Miami). A pair of ground outs would advance Richardson to third, before catcher Pratt Maynard (NC State) singled to bring home the run. Ott would come on to start the home half of the inning, and despite allowing a one-out walk, followed by a single by Martin, he would strike out the final two batters to end the contest and give Harwich their seventh win of the season.

The Anglers head back out on the road Sunday night to Orleans for their annual Independence Day matchup with the Firebirds. First pitch is scheduled for 7pm, with the broadcast starting at 6:40pm with the Anglers Extra Pregame Show.
