Four-Run Fourth Leads Hyannis Over Anglers

by Anglers Media Team, 06-26-2010

Four-Run Fourth Leads Hyannis Over Anglers A loss at Hyannis on Saturday night gave the Anglers their first back-to-back losses of the 2010 season, and dropped their record to 7-4-1, good for third in the Eastern Division. The Harbor Hawks now sit at .500 with a 6-6 record after the 6-2 win, and are tied atop the Western Division with Falmouth and Bourne.

Kevin Berry (New Orleans) was called upon to start for the Anglers and came in to the outing with a 1-1 record over three appearances (one start) and a 2.84 ERA. He would get one run of support early in the contest after Rick Oropesa (USC) got aboard with a two-out single in the first, and was brought around to score in the next at-bat on an RBI single by Joe Pavone (UConn) to give Chatham the 1-0 lead.

That lead wouldn't last as Berry got roughed up early. Mark Micowski (Georgia St.) singled to lead off the inning, advanced to second with a stolen base, and moved to third on an infield single by Casey McElroy (Auburn). Both runners would score in the next at-bat on a two-run single by Jason Nappi (Harding), giving Hyannis a 2-1 lead.

That lead would hold into the third when Stephen Perez (Miami) doubled with one out, was advanced to third on a single by Oropesa, and came home on an RBI sacrifice fly by Pavone to tie the score 2-2. Those two runs, however, would be the extent of Chatham's offense.

Berry came on to start the fourth and gave up a leadoff single to Dan Sheppard (Iowa), followed by a bunt single by John Gianis (NC State). With men on first and second, Zach Osborne (Tennessee) laid down a bunt that was fielded by Berry coming down off the mound. Recognizing a chance to retire the lead runner, his throw to third was not in time, and the bases were loaded. With Micowski at the plate, Pavone allowed a pitch to skip past him and to the backstop, bringing Sheppard home. Micowski would then bring home a run on a single. A.J. Pettersen (Minnesota) stepped in after Micowski, and after taking a strike, Pavone snapped up out of the crouch attempting to force the runner at first back to the bag. However, catcher's interference was ruled by the home plate umpire, putting Pettersen on first. McElroy would single in two more runs in the next at-bat, and give the Harbor Hawks a 6-2 lead, which they would not relinquish.

Hyannis starter Trent Howard earned the victory, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts through 5.1 innings of work. Berry was saddled with the loss after giving up six runs on ten hits and two walks with three strikeouts through his four innings of work.

Chatham returns home Sunday afternoon for a doubleheader with visiting Wareham at Veteran's Field. First pitch of Game One is scheduled for 4pm, with Jack Armstrong (Vanderbilt) set to take the mound for the Gatemen opposite Derek Self (Louisville) for the Anglers. Game Two will begin roughly 30 minutes after the end of the first game, with Max Perlman (Harvard) scheduled to take the hill for Wareham opposite Logan Verrett (Baylor) for Chatham.
