Anglers Walk Off With Another Win, Defeat Falmouth 4-3
Extra innings' Check. Walkoff win' You betcha. Riley Reynolds (Vanderbilt), in just his third appearance of the season, drove Dan Paolini (Siena) home from second with two outs in the bottom of the tenth to give the Anglers their sixth win of the season. They now stand at 6-2-1, second in the Eastern Division. Kevin Vance (UConn), in relief, earned his first win of the season on the strength of two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, striking out a pair. Nick Brown (Iowa) was saddled with the loss after giving up the one run to Reynolds and four hits through 2.1 innings of relief.

Chatham struck first in the second inning as newcomer Aaron Westlake (Vanderbilt) led off the inning with a single. After being advanced to second on a walk to Paolini, and to third on a bunt single by Jacob Stallings (UNC), Westlake came home on a double play groundout by Reynolds to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Anglers.

The lead would not hold for very long as Kyle Bluestein (Jacksonville State) and Kevin Medrano (Missouri State) both came around to score in the third on RBI singles by Nick Martini (Kansas State) and B.A. Vollmuth (Southern Mississippi) to put the Commodores up 2-1.

The Anglers would strike back in the bottom half of the frame when Brian Humphries (Pepperdine) led off the inning with a solo home run to tie the score 2-2. Not to be outdone, Bluestein led off the fourth inning with a double, advanced to third on a groundout, then crossed the plate after a passed ball by Stallings to put Falmouth back on top 3-2.

Then the game became a pitcher's duel. Falmouth starter Matt Stites (Jefferson College) and reliever Jarred Hippen (Iowa) held the Anglers scoreless between the fourth and seventh innings, allowing just three base runners (two walks, one hit batsman). Jason Martin (San Jose St.) was removed from the game in the fifth after taking a pitch to the helmet while attempting to lay down a bunt. He was able to walk off under his own power, and Mark Ginther (Oklahoma State) took his spot in the lineup.

Chatham starter Joe Zimmerman (New Orleans) allowed three runs through five and then fellow Privateer Kevin Berry (New Orleans) and Mark Zecchino (Virginia Tech) combined to hold the Commodores scoreless between the sixth and eighth innings allowing just one base runner on a throwing error by Ginther.

The Anglers would again prove powerful down the stretch, as Stephen Perez (Miami), making his Chatham debut at shortstop, legged out an infield single, was advanced to third on a single by Rick Oropesa (USC), and brought home on an RBI single by Peter Verdin (Georgia) to tie the score 3-3.

Vance was brought on in relief to start the ninth, and retired the side in order, thanks in large part to a leaping catch in centerfield by Humphries to end the inning. Chatham threatened in the bottom half of the inning, but stranded men on first and second to take the game into extra innings.

Falmouth looked to have a good chance to take the lead in the top of the tenth after KC Serna (Oregon) doubled with two outs in a 14 pitch at-bat and then stole third. Medrano worked a walk to put men on the corners but was squandered as Vance induced a fly out to right by Martini.

The bottom half of the frame had that same old familiar feeling with the five, six and seven batters due up against Brown. After Westlake flew out to left, Paolini reached on a hard-hit double. After a strikeout by Stallings, Reynolds stepped in and shot a single to left to bring home the winning run.

The Anglers' record now stands at 6-2-1, with a trip to Wareham on the docket for Thursday evening. It will be the first meeting between the two teams this season. The Gatemen carry in a record of 3-6, fourth in the Western Division. First pitch is scheduled for 7pm, with the Anglers Extra Pregame Show beginning at 6:40pm.
