Vance's Walkoff Blast Keeps Chatham On Top of the Standings

by Anglers Media Team, 06-20-2010

Vance's Walkoff Blast Keeps Chatham On Top of the Standings A pinch-hit walkoff 3-run home run by Kevin Vance (UConn) gave the Anglers their fifth win of the season, this time over the visiting Falmouth Commodores, running their record up to 5-1-1, the best in the league. Vances bomb came on the heels of a stellar debut outing by returning Angler Logan Verrett (Baylor). The right hander pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and one walk, and striking out nine batters.

Neither team produced much offensively through the first seven innings of play, with Verrett and Falmouth starter Mark Pope (Georgia Tech) allowing just seven hits. Pope worked six innings in his start, striking out five and issuing two walks. Verrett struck out the side in the fifth, and at one point retired eight of ten consecutive batters via the strikeout.

Falmouth finally struck for the first run, as shortstop KC Serna (Oregon) drove in Dylan Craig (Belmont) with a single after Craig was brought on to pinch run for Chris OBrien (Wichita State) who led off the inning with a walk. The Anglers were only able to put one man on in the bottom half of the frame, and sent Matt Brazis on in the ninth to keep the Falmouth lead at one. He proceeded to set down the side in order, thanks to a spectacular defensive play by shortstop Billy Besinger (Babson).

Facing the possibility of just their second loss of the season, Chatham was due to send the 4, 5, and 6 batters to the dish to square off against lefty reliever Chris Jones (Oregon), who had been brought on to start the ninth.

Rick Oropesa (USC) got the ball rolling in true Chatham form, blasting a double to the wall. Mark Ginther (Oklahoma State) then reached first safely after a bloop single that bounced over the mound off of a high bounce in front of the plate to drop in for a hit. Dan Paolini (Siena) then singled to drive in Oropesa from second, advancing Ginther into scoring position at second, and tying the score at 1-1.

With men on first and second, Vance was called on to pinch hit for Jacob Stallings (UNC). On the first pitch of the at-bat he drove a blast to deep left-center field, clearing the fence and giving the Anglers the 4-1 victory in walkoff fashion.

Brazis was credited with his second win of the season. Jones was saddled with the loss, his first. The Anglers have Monday off, and will return to Veterans Field Tuesday evening to face the Bourne Braves for the first time this season in a 7pm start.
