Fog Can't Keep Chatham from First Win
A night after having their opener against the Wareham Gatemen called after one inning due to fog, the Chatham Anglers were once again unable to complete nine innings at Veterans Field, but still managed to emerge with a 4-1 win over the Hyannis Mets. With John Schiffner once again away from the team for medical reasons, Tyler Kincaid managed the team, and sent Boston College freshman Mike Dennhardt out to face Notre Dame sophomore Cole Johnson. Dennhardt was solid, scattering four hits an and unearned run over four innings.

Chatham's offensive production came from the lower portion of the batting order. Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Steven Brooks laced a bases loaded double to left field, scoring Oklahoma State Cowboys Dean Green and Tom Belza. After the fourth, a half hour fog delay was called, chasing Dennhardt from the game, and keeping him from the win. When the game resumed, Kincaid called on Vanderbilt righthander Russell Brewer. Brewer is no stranger to the Cape League, as he racked up twelve saves for Hyannis a year ago en route to being named the league's Outstanding Reliever. After allowing back to back singles to open the fifth, Brewer settled down, retiring the next three in order. The Angler offense provided another boost, as Matt Duffy doubled before being driven home on a Dean Green double.

Brewer appreciated the boost, as he struck out the side in the sixth before giving way to another Commodore, Taylor Hill, in the seventh. Hill struck out the side around a walk and single. When Hill struck out pinch hitter Dustin Harrington, the Anglers had recorded their last eight outs via strikeout. Hill retired the side in order in the eighth before the fireworks began. Tom Belza, already 2-2 with a walk, led off the Chatham eighth. He cracked a first pitch in heavy fog towards centerfield, where Trent Whitehead could not see the ball. The ball rolled all the way to the wall, as Belza, not slowing at all, rounded the bases for an inside the park home run, Chatham's first of the summer. The bizarre play prompted the umpires to immediately bring the teams off the field, and following a thirty minute delay, the game was called off.

Notes
The Opening Day win was Chatham's first since a 6-5 decision over Y-D in 2006. Interestingly enough, the scheduled opener in 2006 was also cancelled due to fog.

Box Score
WP- Russell Brewer (1-0) LP- Cole Johnson (0-1) SV- Taylor Hill (1)
