Loss to Brewster Ends Playoff Hopes

by Brian Clark, 08-06-2008

Loss to Brewster Ends Playoff Hopes In order to stay alive in the hunt for the final playoff berth in the Eastern Division, the A's required both a win over Brewster Wednesday night, and a Harwich loss to Orleans. Unfortunately for Chatham, neither of those happened, as the Whitecaps defeated the A's 9-1, while Harwich topped Orleans 5-3. The A's felt confident entering the game, owning a 5-0 season mark against Brewster, but the Whitecaps took an early lead off of A's starter Justin Marks, scoring a first inning run.

Chatham tied it in the bottom of the third, as Victor Sanchez singled with the bases loaded, scoring Corey Overholtzer. However, the Whitecaps offense would then erupt, scoring four in the top of the fourth off of marks, highlighted by a two-out, two RBI double from Brent Milleville.

Marks was lifted for David Hale, who worked a perfect fifth, a scoreless sixth, but ran into trouble in the seventh, as the Whitecaps scored four more runs on five hits. In total, Brewster pounded out fifteen base hits, scoring nine runs, while the A's could only manage a run on four hits. A highlight for Chatham came in the top of the ninth, as Kyle Bellows made his first pitching appearance of the summer. Bellows, who hadn't pitched since high school, worked a 1-2-3 inning, highlighted by two strikeouts. However, that was the lone highlight for the A's, who lost 9-1.

The final day of the regular season now has little significance, as the A's prepare to play a doubleheader. They travel to Wareham for a makeup of Saturday's rainout, playing the Gatemen at 1. In the evening, they'll conclude the 2008 season with a trip to Eldredge Park to take on the Eastern Division champion Orleans Cardinals at 7.
