Game 42 Preview: Chatham at Harwich

Chatham is one point behind fourth-place Harwich in the East division standings, facing the Mariners twice in the next three days. If the Anglers are tied with the Mariners at the end of the regular season, Chatham would win the head-to-head and clinch a playoff spot. The Anglers are 2-0-2 against Harwich this season.

Probable Pitchers

Lebarron Johnson Jr. (Texas) will start for the Anglers, making his sixth appearance on the mound. He has an 11.81 ERA this season, striking out eight batters in 5.1 innings. Johnson struck out 21 batters in 17.0 with the Longhorns in the spring.

Liam Sullivan will start for the Mariners, holding a 2.16 ERA in 25 innings this season. He pitched against the Anglers on July 2, giving up one run and three hits in five innings. Sullivan struck out eight batters in that game as well.

Chatham Players to Watch

Roc Riggio's (Oklahoma State) 12-game hitting streak ended on Friday, but he provided Chatham its only offense on Saturday with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. He's now tied with Guy Garibay Jr. (Rice) with the most RBIs (19) on the Anglers this season.

Cooper Ingle (Clemson) leads the Anglers with a .255 batting average. He's first on the team with 27 walks and third with 28 hits this season. Ingle notched a hit in five straight games before Chatham's tie against Bourne on Saturday.

Harwich Players to Watch

Nick Goodwin leads the Mariners in batting average with at least 50 at-bats, bringing in 22 runs so far this season. He also leads the team with six home runs. Goodwin had 11 home runs with 34 hits at Kansas State in 2022.

Hunter Stokely finished with three batters in the Mariners' most previous matchup against the Anglers, striking out twice with two hits. He has recorded 14 hits this season, bringing in 16 runs this season.

Stat to Know ' 9

Chatham now has nine ties this season, tying the league record which Orleans set in 1977. Two of those ties came against fourth-place Harwich. Bourne, Brewster and Yarmouth-Dennis are next closest with seven ties.

Last Time They Played

After Stokely's home run bounced off the right-field light tower in the top of the sixth, the tale of a disappearing lead seemed to write itself again. But Chuck Ingram (Wichita State) lined his own deep ball in the ensuing frame, knocking the left-field fence before Riggio slid home. And Johnson found his groove on the mound, striking out three straight batters in the top of the seventh. 'Baseball is all about momentum,' Johnson said. 'As a pitcher, you want to stop the other team and give our hitters a chance to do things like that.' The Anglers extended their lead before the Mariners fought back, fending off Harwich in a 9-8 win. The Anglers finished with 14 hits while Garibay notched a team-high two RBIs. Chatham won back-to-back games for the first time since June 20.
