Game 24 Preview: Chatham at Brewster

Chatham tied its second-most number of hits this season on Thursday, recording nine in the loss to Brewster. The last time the Anglers reached nine hits, they defeated Harwich 5-1 in their second game of the year. But the Whitecaps recorded 15 hits of their own, defeating Chatham 9-6.

The Anglers now head to Stony Brook Field for the third time this season in the last matchup of the home-and-home series.

Probable Pitchers

Cam Brown (TCU) will take the mound first for the Anglers. He last made a relief appearance against Bourne, allowing three hits while striking out four batters. Brown recorded a 4.42 ERA with the Horned Frogs this year.

Carson Liggett will start for Brewster after making one start earlier this season. In 4.2 innings, Ligettt gave up one run against Wareham, striking out four of the 17 batters he faced. Ligett had a 4.68 ERA in his freshman season at Louisville.

Chatham Players to Watch

Mitchell Daly (Texas) recorded his first Cape Cod Baseball League hit and RBI in Thursday's contest against Brewster. Daly was activated by the Anglers last week, making his first appearance as a pinch-hitter on June 30 versus Yarmouth-Dennis.

Roc Riggio throughout the majority of the first half of the season, but he's finally found his stride in Chatham's last few games. After a two-RBI triple in the Anglers' 4-4 tie against Harwich, Riggio brought in one run on Thursday.

Brewster Players to Watch

Kurtis Byrne torched the Anglers pitching staff yesterday, scorching three hits for five RBIs. He touched home plate twice himself as well, not striking out once in the entire contest. Byrne, who's teammates with Brown, hit .291 at TCU this season.

Carson Demartini matched Byrne's three hits against the Anglers, bringing Cameron Fisher home in the fourth inning. He's recorded eight RBIs so far this season, including two home runs. The Virginia Tech sophomore hit .250 in 2022.

Chatham last defeated Brewster at Stony Brook Field on July 16 2019. The Anglers won 7-2, their fourth straight win of the season. The Whitecaps defeated them at home 9-1 three days later. This year, Chatham has lost twice at Brewster, scoring one run in both matchups.

Last Time They Played

The Anglers offense has struggled throughout this season, but they erupted late in the game last night. But for one of the first times in 2022, the pitching staff broke down as Wyatt Evans (Tennessee), who played at most 1.1 innings this season, finished with a 9.00 ERA in 3.1 innings.

Brewster recorded five runs in the fourth inning, but the Anglers bounced back with three in the sixth. Chatham couldn't get back onto the scoreboard for the rest of the game while the Whitecaps continued to find offense against the Anglers third and fourth pitches of the night, adding four more runs in the final two innings.
