Chatham Check-In: May 5

The third installment of Chatham Check-In covers an MLB faceoff between two alums and four players from last summer's team.

Garrett Whitlock and Alek Manoah

Whitlock and Manoah faced off against each other when the Boston Red Sox played the Toronto Blue Jays on April 27. Manoah won the matchup, leading Toronto to a 1-0 win over the Blue Jays. He had seven strikeouts on 92 pitches, only giving up three hits. On the other hand, Whitlock allowed the eventual game-winning run despite allowing just four hits.

Whitlock played six games with the Anglers in 2016, recording a 2.00 ERA. Manoah struck out 60 batters in nine starts for Chatham.

Johnny Castagnozzi

Castagnozzi has played both right side infield spots for North Carolina. As of May 5, the Long Islander is hitting .291, and his 48 base knocks rank third among all Tar Heels. Castagnozzi got off to a hot start to the 2022 season, hitting .410 through the first month of play. He has 14-multi hit games this season.

New York's top shortstop in the 2020 class played 14 games last summer for Chatham and hit two home runs.

David Mendham

Mendham, another Oklahoma State product, appeared in 16 games with Chatham last season, totaling five hits over 31 at-bats. Mendham went 2-for-2 against Brewster on July 14, and knocked his only RBI of the summer.

The 6-foot-1 first baseman is a native of Ontario, Canada and is playing his first season with the Cowboys this spring after playing in 54 games at South Carolina last year and starting for two years at Connors State Community College from 2019-20. So far this year, Mendham has recorded a .291 batting average with seven home runs and 31 RBIs.

Sebastian Keane

Keane was selected in the 11th round by the Boston Red Sox in the 2019 MLB Draft. The North Andover native became the first in program history to fufill his commitment to Northeastern and has been a mainstay for the Huskies. As of May 1st, Keane has tossed over 50 innings and has a 6.63 ERA.

The 2020 Baseball America Freshman of the Year made seven appearances on the bump with Chatham last summer. Keane posted a 3.85 ERA and struck out 25 batters.

Brandon Sproat

Sproat has played in 12 games this season, posting eight strikeouts in three of those matchups. The third-year at Florida had his first career start on May 11, 2021, when he threw four shutout innings in a 6-1 loss to Stetson. He earned Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week honors on March 7 after a combined 8.1 shutout innings in two games.

Last season, Sproat only pitched in one game for the Anglers, giving up four runs in a 5-2 loss to Brewster. He had three total hits with a .333 OSLG.
