Chatham President Steve West reflects on CCBL cancellation

Despite the Cape Cod Baseball League’s cancellation, Chatham Anglers Association president Steve West will still be at Veterans Field this summer, he said. It's a set-back, but there’s still work to be done. West hopes his presence provides some kind of normalcy during this unprecedented time.

Five days ago, the CCBL announced it’s cancellation, a unanimous decision by the league’s executive committee. In wake of the news, West expressed his sorrow in an email to members of the organization, but urged them to look forward to Chatham’s future.

“It just became apparent that it wasn’t going to be possible,” West said. “And we’re all disappointed, very disappointed, but that’s the end result. In the end, that’s the right answer.”

Originally, there were hopes for the full season to continue as planned, West said, but as the season-opener approached those plans looked less and less feasible. The league consulted medical doctors and trainers who advised cancellation and that “pretty much sealed the deal,” West said.

“The fans are disappointed. The volunteers are disappointed. We're all disappointed,” West said. “[But] in the grand scheme of things, a summer without Cape League baseball in today's environment isn't the worst thing that can happen.”

West’s full interview is available on the latest episode of A’s Extra.
