Six former Chatham players made Baseball America’s list of the top 25 all-time Cape League players released on Monday — the most of any team. Together, Thurman Munson, Ken Voges, Andrew Miller, Dave Bush, Ed Baird and Zane Carlson played 12 seasons with the Anglers and won batting titles, pitching awards and league championships.

All six Chatham players then went on to play professionally across 10 different organizations, some earning World Series appearances while others bounced around the minor leagues.

Here’s a look at the six players representing the Anglers.

No. 3 — Thurman Munson, 1967

During Munson’s summer with Chatham, he hit .420 and won the league’s batting title while helping the Chatham Town Team win their first Cape League championship in the modern era. One year later, the New York Yankees selected the catcher in the first round; he went on to play nearly 11 full MLB seasons before dying in a plane crash during the 1979 season. 

No. 6 — Ken Voges, 1963

Voges set the Cape League’s batting record in one season with the Chatham Town Team by hitting .505 over 109 at-bats. After Chatham, the outfielder spent four years playing for various Chicago Cubs affiliates — the St. Cloud Rox, Quincy Cubs, Wenatchee Chiefs and Lodi Crushers.

No. 11 — Andrew Miller, 2004-05

Miller, the most recent Chatham player on the list, spent two seasons in the Cape League and was named the league’s No. 1 prospect by Baseball America both summers. He combined to go 8-0 over two seasons and struck out 114 batters in 89 innings. One year later, the Detroit Tigers selected him with the sixth-overall pick in the MLB Draft, starting a professional career that’s included stops in Boston, Baltimore, New York, Cleveland and St. Louis. With the Red Sox in 2013, Miller earned a World Series ring.

No. 13 — Dave Bush, 2000-01

Bush’s 0.84 ERA his first year with Chatham dropped even further to 0.31 the next summer, earning his second consecutive Cape League East Division All-Star honor. From there he went on to a professional career that extended nine years, with his last appearance coming in 2013 with the Toronto Blue Jays. 

No. 18 — Ed Baird, 1965-67

A three-year player for the Chatham Town Team, Baird combined for a 16-2 record, and his 0.45 ERA in 1965 was a league record at the time. He also finished the 1966 season as the league’s strikeout leader. After the Boston Red Sox selected him in 1968, he spent the next two seasons with their minor league teams — the Winston-Salem Red Sox and Pittsfield Red Sox.

No. 25 — Zane Carlson, 2001-03 

By the time Carlson finished his three-summer stint in Chatham, he was the league’s all-time saves leader. After a 2002 season with 12 of his 34 career saves, Carlson earned the Russ Ford Award, given to the Cape League’s top reliever. He was drafted in 2004, and combined for a 7-6 record over three seasons with the Kansas City Royals’ minor league affiliates. During his first year of rookie ball with the Idaho Falls Chukars, Carlson tallied 10 saves in 19 appearances.
