Chatham (1-0) is on the road again on Tuesday night at the Cotuit Kettleers (1-0) for their first meeting of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Lowell Park.

Chatham’s first game didn’t lack drama. The A’s rallied from three runs down to score two in eighth inning, one in the ninth, and one more in the 10th to defeat Hyannis (0-1), 5-4, in extra innings.

Cotuit squeaked out a close win over Yarmouth-Dennis on Monday night, after trailing at two separate points in the game. The Kettleers scored two in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead, and then Adam Oviedo’s (TCU) two-run single in the seventh inning gave Cotuit a 4-3 lead for good.

Chatham Probable Pitchers

Jack Conlon - Conlon (San Jacinto) will pitch the first three innings for the Anglers on Tuesday night. He’s a Cape League veteran, having thrown 26 innings for Chatham last season. In those 26 innings, the right-hander struck out 23, finishing with a 2-1 record in nine appearances and a 5.53 ERA. His fastball reached as high as 96 on the radar gun during his sophomore year at San Jacinto College. He’ll feature a changeup and a slider as well.

Haydn King - King (UNLV) is on the Cape after redshirting his season at UNLV. The lefty is expected to pitch the middle innings (4-6). The California native began his collegiate career at the University of San Francisco, posting a 7.31 ERA before transferring.

Austin Vernon - At 6’7, 295 lbs., Vernon (NC Central) immediately stands out during practice. His size and smooth throwing motion from the right side, combined with solid control, kept hitters off balance during his pitching session on Saturday. Now, he’ll look to close out Tuesday’s game with the Kettleers, throwing the final three innings. For North Carolina Central in 2019, Vernon struck out more than one batter per inning.

Players to Watch

Kaden Polcovich - Polcovich (NW Florida State) managed three hits in six at-bats last night, and scored the game-winning run. He’s likely to hit lead-off again tonight.

Jamal O’Guinn - The A’s designated hitter, O’Guinn (USC) had four quality at-bats last night, managing two hits, a walk and a well-hit ball that produced an out. Holliday said after the game he thought Chatham had a lot of quality at-bats, despite the lack of success with runners on base. He led USC in on-base percentage in 2019.

Stat to Know - 15

The number of baserunners Chatham stranded in Monday night’s opener. They’ll have to be better situationally going forward, as the Anglers left runners on base in almost every inning, including the fifth, sixth, eighth, ninth, and 10th.

Chatham won just one of four meetings with Cotuit in 2018, outscored 34-19 in those contests.
